What's the typical dress code for the opera?
My first time. What do you wear anyways? I'm so excited, and trying not to stick out like a sore thumb. The man is planning on wearing a typical suit.
Help please!
|
Is this the Opera in NY City? If so, you can wear a nice skirt and sweater or top if it is a week night, maybe a pants suit, somehthing black would be good:)people don't dress up a lot, weekends can be dressier..it is very cold, wear gloves, scarf and all the trimmings! and Enjoy!

Everything from a very nice pant suit, dress or evening gown will be appropriate... I have only been to one opera and wore a black silk pant suit and did not feel out of place at all; I was in college at the time and really couldn't afford to go out and buy a new outfit to wear and I already had the suit. If I could have afforded to go buy something special, I would have worn a simple evening gown.

Hey thanks, but I'm going to an opera in Jacksonville, Florida. It will be on a Saturday night, going to see Rigo Letto. Can it really be that casual? That would be wonderful!!
|
Jacksonville Fla Opera - you can wear a lightweight suit, a pretty top with a skirt, heels. My mother lives in Jax and goes to concerts and operas often, it is not very dressy..
|
BTW- it is Rigoletto :) and it is wonderful~M

I've been to several shows & operas in Jax, and I've worn anything from upscale cocktail dresses with heels to a plain blouse & pants with flats. I've seen people in nice jeans too. You'll be comfortable in just about anything I'm sure.

Second year series at the Met in NYC. It looks like it depends on where you sit. I am in nose bleed plenty of jeans up there. Perhaps this is the case in orchestra but I see a lot of gowns and tux. I have had ballet orchestra seats and there I bumped into someone in velour sweats. Those seats are about $80 a pop so I was surprised.

M,
Is the Opera at the Florida Theater?
|
Sssss, that is nice, but this is about the opera in Jacksonville Florida.
|
You know-when I was at the Royal Opera House in London, there were kids there dressed in sweaters and jeans, that is either what they could afford or all they had to wear, but they were there to hear the opera, and that was what was important...whatever makes you feel comfortable, wear it and enjoy the beautiful music.there will always be someone who is dressed either too well or not well enough, but it is about the music, not what the audience wears...enjoy!

The opera is at the Times Union Center in the Moran Theatre. I was wondering which one is considered better, the Florida Theatre or the Times Union Center. I'm pretty new to the area. Thanks everyone for your info. Glad to know I don't have to go shopping to go to the opera.
