When we were renovating our home, we used our AmEx card as much as possible, accumulating enough points for two (free) economy class tickets on Air France. But we really wanted to go to Turkey, so we flew for free to Paris, then on to Turkey for two weeks. In exchange for our children for three weeks, the inlaws gave us a week of their timeshare time, which we used in Turkey. All in all, we spent about $1000 for 12 days in Turkey and 2 days in Paris, including airfare to Turkey from Paris, hotels and meals. (Not counting the kilims and trinkets we purchased!)

Penny, that's a great story! Please let your in-laws know that my kids are available for exchange any time.

Agree Suzy it is kind of like saying My parents sent me to Europe and I did not pay a dime. What a deal.

Great Britain and Ireland for 5 weeks in 1993 Youth Hostels and pub grub $1500!!!

If we are still counting freebes from Friends Santa Fe NM Thanksgiving 1998 only had to pay for Airfare.

Shall I also include every time a man paid for me? Hawaii 2001 boy friend took me over and we stayed for 1 month. HE PAID FOR EVERYTHING! I think the creative planning of Great Britain and Ireland and what other posters have mentioned is more interesting.

When I was in graduate school, my wife and I were poor with a big P, but needed a vacation over the summer.
We went to a campground in Truro on Cape Cod. We probably paid $5-$10 per nite for the campsite. We ate cereal for breakfast, then hit the beach. Lunch every day was a double dip ice cream cone at Friendly's. Dinner was either hot dogs at the campsite or a splurge at a clam shack.
I don't remember exactly, but let's figure $10 times 5 nites. breakfast free...lunch 2.50 (cones were 1.25 back then). And, an average of 20/nite for dinner. We did a week on the cape for under $200.00, and it is one of our fondest memories.

Ruth,

Just wondering, How much did the man pay for you? Did he get a multi day discount?

Camping in Maine on Mount Desert Island for about $20 a night. Split meals between the campsite (which also had a small restaurant) and eating out. The campground would actually prepare a whole lobster at $4.95/pound that you could eat at their little restaurant or take back to your site. So, all in all, we spent a week in Maine for under $300 dollars.

inquiring mind. It was a four star beach front property in Waikiki. A precondition of my going on the trip. I think he spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $3000-$4000 we also took an interisland trip to his condo on Maui. Actually it was a 3-4 month stay in Waikiki.

Hey I was in the Youth Hostel Crowd but I don't walk away from trips like this. Oh yes I also lived with this guy for 2.5 years after this so he did get his monies worth!!! Not a regular thing in my life getting huge gifts from men but this was fun!!

Truth be known I was a young and I am not sure the relationship would have happened if he was not offering me Hawaii. Great relationship but I did truck over from NYC so I could have just as easily have said good bye. In some sense he did buy my affections.

Now I will turn the mike over to those that found deals in a creative way. Well more creative anyway

The "downside" of our cheap and creative vacations is that the children are returned to us after three weeks of being spoiled without mercy by Grandma and Grandpa.

Ten years ago we decided to take a week off in the summer with our 2 boys, ages 8 & 4, and do "day trips". We went to free parks & had picnics, played board games, etc. One day we drove to the mountains & spent the day at a park, which did cost money, but not a lot. We had a great time and were patting ourselves on the back for our "cheap" vacation . . . and then I got pregnant during this cheap vacation. I'm certain of when I got pregnant. We still laugh about our "cheap" vacation, who is now 9 years old!

How about a 21 day trip rafting the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon for $225 per person. Of course, it was a private trip and we had our own raft, cooked our own food, etc.

Went to Oklahoma City, OK, stayed with my Aunt Edna, played Canasta with her and her knitting friends, ate Cream of Wheat for Breakfast, Cornbeef on Rye for Lunch, and Pot Pies for dinner. One week, $5.

About 13 years ago - in college - I went from Albany to Florida (various beaches on the east coast) for $120 for 9 days. Seven of us rented a van and drove down...most of the $120 was spent on the car rental and gas...the rest on hotels and food. We spent most nights with families of friends, and we ate lots of Taco Bell (I think it was 85 cents for a taco) and got tons of free snacks in Daytona...MTV was there giving away lots of stuff. Ah...the fun, dirt-poor college life...can't beat it.

Not the absolute cheapest, but the best value for the money:

17 day driving trip through the western USA for $650 for two in 1983. This included a night in a Las Vegas hotel, taking friends to a French restaurant in San Francisco, 7 rolls of film developing, a national parks pass, good wine and cheese daily, and 5200 miles in the car. We kept costs down by camping a lot, staying with friends, cooking for ourselves most of the time, and getting 40+ miles per gallon. We had a blast.

In 1986 I travelled through England and Scotland for 6 weeks on something like $1000 including airfare. On that trip, I stayed with friends, in youth hostels, and low-priced B&Bs. At one place, I got B&B for about 50p or 1 pound a night because I helped the proprietor work in his garden. I went to several plays in London, took a few good tours from smaller towns, and ate pretty well. Great trip.

Whahoooooooo! Linda I hope you are seeking out what there is to do on Oahu. Did you check out go-hawaii.com and then the calendar. You are going to have a wonderful time. Don't forget to take drive over the pali and into the windward sides. AND WHY IS THE UK GETTING ALL THE DEALS, no such thing here for Hawaii.
