Working on hiring of a car in California what is the best hire companies going around

There isn't one 'best', really. I'm assuming you are from overseas. If so, there are brokers that get you much better rates with insurance, mileage and no drop off fees if you book from home.

While I completely agree with Janisj that there isn't necessarily any one agency which is "best" I strongly disagree that a wholesaler or consolidator is going to get you a rental that is void of any drop fees.

Even Autoeurope adds in drop fees. The US agencies do it by adding that fee onto the daily rental rate.

You can easily find out how much, if any, drop fee is involved by going to any of the agency webisites and renting a particular vehicle and indicating a drop off point whih is the same as the pickup point and noting the rate. Then, do the same thing with the same car and dates putting in a different drop-off point. The drop fee will appear as a rate increase.

I don't know the details but I do know there are deals available in Oz that include taxes and insurance that are better than you will get by renting direct from a US company.

I would just be sure the company you get is one of the majors so that if there is any problem with the car there is easy access to another vehicle.

Dukey - you are simply incorrect. Just as we can get cheaper rentals in foreign countries than locals can . . . Foreign visitors to the States can get better deals using specialist brokers. Carhire3000 is one but there are others.

No drop off fees, and the biggie for visitors - all insurance included.

janisj, one minor correction, starting last year, carhire3000 and its parent company, rentalcars.com, were starting to charge dropoff fees for July and August travel between CA, NV and AZ, when they normally waive them. Rest of the year is no charge.
