What's open on X-Mas day in NYC?
 

We'll be in NYC from 12/23-12/26 and were wondering if there will be any Broadway shows on X-Mas day?<BR>Also was wondering about restaurants.<BR>Anyone remember from last year?

Some restaurants will be open, but I seriously doubt there will be Broadway shows (how the heck could you get the entire cast and orchestra to show up for work on Christmas?). Movie theaters are open! I go see a movie on Christmas every year.

We will be in NYC over New Years and I know they have a modified theater schedule. We're actually seeing a show on both New Years Eve and another on New Years Day. General rule of thumb, whether in NYC or elsewhere: Chinese restaurants are always open on Christmas.

Try St. Patricks's. I'm sure it's open, and the lead actor wears a great costume. A beautiful cape and a funny hat.

Mary - thanks for providing the info...I had no idea that some shows would be playing on Christmas. Maybe I'll go to one next year instead of the movies!

Most shows won't have performances on Tuesday 12/24 or their typical Wednesday afternoon matinees on Christmas Day. Most should have performances on Christmas Night.<BR><BR>As NYC has a high jewish population, I'm sure you'll be able to find at least a few open restaurants.

You'll be amazed how many places are open on Christmas day. I spent Christmas one year with a Jewish friend and we went to the movies and out to eat afterwards. It was a lot of fun, and there are lots of people out and about that day. You won't be bored.

Of course Chinese restaurants are open Christmas Day. Didn't you see A Christmas Story?

Some shows are playing evening shows on the 25th--Man of La Mancha,is, for example. The restaurants that are open fall into 2 basic categories--fancy xmas dinner type places and places owned by non-christians (e.g. the Chinese, maybe Indian, and Jewish /kosher places mentioned above).<BR>Very few stores are open--maybe some food stores and some drugstores. I think the outdoor skating rinks (Wollman in Central Park, maybe Rockefeller center ) are open too. Xmas eve is actually tougher than Xmas day, since most places close early on the 24th.

Chinese restaurants and movie theatres.

What about the kosher deli's? Won't they be open?

Nothing...the town actually closes down for the day. In fact, the even roll up the streets and sidewalks to prevent anyone from coming into or leaving town.

Yes, 7-11 is open. They now have frozen Boston Market meals in the cool case. Pick one out, say Meat Loaf and Mashed Potatoes, pop them in the microwave and top with our chili and nacho cheese sauce.

It's hardly a stupid question. The majority of businesses will be closed. I have friends who are Jewish and who lived in the city and said they had the same routine every Christmas, Chinese food and a movie, since everything was closed. lisa is right.

This is NOT SO. I've spent several Christmas's in NYC and never had trouble finding a place to eat, nor did we ever have to resort to going to a movie (pleeeze, you can do that in your own hometown)....there are Broadway theaters that will have a performance.

I got news for nyer and others: A lot of restaurants owned by Christians are open on Christmas day!<BR>The majority of Broadway shows have evening performances on December 25. However, none is scheduled for the matinee.
