What's going on in Vegas in early March?

I was just looking into rooms for Vegas from March 6-9 and it seems like everything is either booked or the cheapest room is over $500 (at the Mirage)? Does anyone know what's going on during that time? It's not even over a weekend!

Probably there are one or more large conventins in town (they can bring an extra 20-30,000 people easily). March through May are prime time for these. why not just pick another weekend?

We will pick another time but my husband's birthday is that week so we wanted to go then. It seems like all of March is really expensive, I'm assuming with Spring Break and March Madness.

if you don't need a big casino hotel, you have to walk about 2 blocks to get to the strip, but try the super 8 on koval. it's right behind bally's. always clean and friendly staff.

I always like the Station Casinos and Hotels (Palace Station, etc). They are mostly just off the strip, are very inexpensive, and have good rooms, good places to eat, and have shuttles to the strip.

I have to go to LV 4-5 times a year for medical appts and always stay at one of them if I'm staying overnight.

We stayed in Vegas a couple years back sometime in March. I think there is a big NASCAR race during that time.

You need to look again. I already had Orbitz up and found rates well below $200 a night at some great hotels.

swalter518- just for the heck of it, I did a Hotwire with your dates. They have on the strip and 4 star for $119 a night. They have quantities of 3 star for less than that, and some for low as $50 but they are all 3 star or less.
That I would not do.

If you just "don't do" the hotwire or priceline thing, then try the Orleans. It's off the strip, very decent and has specials all the time. You also can see the entire strip from some of its rooms and there is easy transport to the strip proper.

If you look at a Vegas map and then choose "off the strip west" or "off the strip east" you will get Rio or Palm (very nice places) for very little $$$- and even when the town is packed. Some of those shabby ones on the strip like Imperial Palace etc. UGH. If you get the Rio, you get an entire suite. I got the Rio on Priceline last year for $35 a night in fall. Voodoo Lounge is there and you could have put 4 NYC hotel rooms in my suite. I would read the amenities and take the Hotwire route, as I don't know if you are as adventurous as Priceline. If you go with 4 star or above - you won't go wrong. Of course they will have your money ahead of time, but there will be more for fun when you get there too.

Thanks all-I was using the hotel website and apparently the Mirage has a huge convention booked, along with NASCAR being in town the day we wanted to check in. My only concern is that my husband wants to play in a tournament those days so I may be alone some and I want to know the location so I can walk around to amuse myself (i.e. to the various hotel malls, etc.)

MikeT Nov 29th, 2004 01:00 PM

Well, it's not like Mirage is in the wilderness. Staying at TI or Caesars next door will be just as convenient.

swalter518 Nov 29th, 2004 01:03 PM

I'm well aware of where the Mirage is Mike. The post was more of a curious nature. We're now looking at Ballys or Paris during this time. Any thoughts on these hotels anyone?

Don't worry. I have walked all the way to MGM and beyond by myself. And was alone some of those trips, because I was only there a day on the way to or from visiting or moving my aunt in Laughlin.

Be you in the next casino, or in the same casino; it's all so big that it makes little difference! You really can't get lost either if you stay on the strip, Flamingo Drive or down by Rio. It's also possible to take a cab- but if it happens to take the Strip route, there are times you could have gotten there faster walking. LOL

You'll have a good time!
