What's doing in Worcester?
 

My fiance is working out of Worcester, MA this summer and I wondered if I might ask for any suggestions for restaurants, bars, happenings, whatever. Something to get him out of his hotel room.

Well, there's some nice furniture stores nearby, and maybe an Applebees... I'm just being fresh, but I don't think it's known as a "happening" place, unless the 20-somethings have made it into something I'm not aware of. It isn't too far from Providence, RI, however, where there is plenty happening. Boston, too, is relatively close. Also, if he's into midevil stuff, there is a nice Armory museum in Worcester. Where is he coming from, and what age group is he in? That might help with future replies.

The art museum is actually quite good. There are some really surprising restaurants (best Thai I ever had, but sorry, can't remember the name) there. Things are so close, too, in that state that it won't be hard to get to other things -- a hop down to Sturbridge Village, 1 1/2 hrs. to Boston, 1 1/2 hrs. to Stockbridge/Tanglewood, and a straight shot up into Vermont/NH. But yes, what does he like to do?

Having to spend a summer in Worcester is sad.

All excellent replies, thanks. He's mid-twenties and we're NYers. I wasn't imagining Worcester was anything happening, but I knew there had to a be a couple good places.

I'll tell him about the restaurants and the museums, that should be helpful.

Gail - it is sad, but he's only there a few nights a week at least, the rest of the time in NYC, which is not so sad ;)

The best restaurants for the money are on Shrewsbury St., the Italian section of the city.

The city, however, is fairly boring. Look into the schedule at the civic center. Maybe there's something worthwhile there.

Restaurant suggestion: The Flying Rhino ... it's very good.

Worcester is close enough to Boston to go there every night if he wanted. Also very close to RI.

There are also a few good clubs with live music.
