What's between Anchorage and Talkeetna
What sites/stops along the way, points of interest, etc. are there between Anchorage and Talkeetna? Sorry, I don't have the famous Milepost book to look it up ;o)

musk ox farm, iditerod HQ

Eagle River Nature Center
Eklutna Historical Park Plettner Sled Dog Kennels (Wasilla) Hatcher Pass (if open) and Independence Mine (get to mine from Palmer if before July 4 when the pass opens) Elmendorf Air Force Base Fort Rich Museum of Alaska Transportation & Industry (I cheated and peeked at the free Anchorage visitors guide. We have visited Iditarod HQ, Independence Mine and Transportation Museum. Once you get past Wasilla, about an hour north of Anchorage, there is very little in the way of stores, restaurants, and gas stations.) |
The above is a complete list, but you do need the MILEPOST, be certain to get a copy if driving interior.
For clairfication, most car rental contracts don't allow driving Hatcher Pass from Wassila anyway, enter from Palmer. As a side trip there is a cheap glacier trekk available with MICA guides. |
I must admit that upon reading the title of your thread, my first thought was, "only the most spectacular view you may ever see if McKinley is in sight!" ;-)
Seriously, though, Milepost has a website which might be helpful: http://www.themilepost.com/ Also, try your local library for a copy. We just returned from our 2 week trip for which we purchased a new copy, but IMHO, most of the reading for "stops along the way" needs to be done BEFORE going to Alaska. The views are so beautiful and ever-changing that it would be unfair to ask a passenger to read the book while traveling the Alaskan highways. And with almost constant daylight, you'll want to do as much as you can before going to bed, so don't expect to do a lot of reading before bedtime. ;-) Enjoy! Alaska is not to be missed! |
