Whatcha Wearing These Days in Charleston?
 

I'm coming to Charleston, S.C. for the first time this weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday, and I see that the daytime temperatures are approx mid 50s, and 40ish in the evening. I have been amidst snowstorms of one to two feet for months now and truly forget what the appropriate clothing for mid 50s is! Are you feeling comfortable with long sleeves and a light jacket? Warmer jacket still? No jacket?

I tend to be colder than others, but if a few of you just tell me what you're wearing these days, I'll make my own adjustments!

Shoot, I went barefoot last weekend! The sun is warm during the day, and once the sun goes down, the breeze off the water can be a little chilly. A sweater or jacket will be fine. You might want a hat. Bring your shades!

Charleston is mild but breezy. Definely pack a sweater or jacket. Long sleeves will not look out of place. You will see locals in sandals (they never really pack those up for the winter) but no one will think you look out of place dressed for early spring.

It seems to me that Charleston has its own color palete for clothing like the buildings. Sherbet colors are more common in the winter in Charleston than in other urban areas. I think people realize they can wear colors other than black, brown and grey after it gets colder.

Poor go_laura! It's cold here now! Run over to Sak's and get a sweater.

I'll be in Charleston around the end of March with my husband and parents (road trip from the Midwest). Like go_laura, we've had 2-3 ft of snow since early December and I can't even remember what spring/summer clothes I have. Would it be too early for cream or white slack/jeans in Charleston or Savanah? How about as you get into the mountains around Asheville?

The flowers are blooming in upstate SC so I imagine it looks like spring in Charleston. Check the weather and wear what every you have that looks like spring.

P.S. A woman from Charleston would think twice about wearing white before Easter. She might still break her grandmother's rule, but she will remember the days when white shoes/pants, etc were reserved from Easter until Labor Day. Cream is fine.

palmettoprincess is right, y'all! But tourists here wear whatever they want. The azaleas are just about to bloom in Charleston and today it will be in the 70s. It will be chillier in the mountains so you'll need sweaters for that. Have fun. It's a great time to visit.

Thanks to you both for helpful info. I'm old school and wouldn't dream of wearing white before Easter here in the Midwest, but wondered if that tradition varied in warmer climates. If temperatures are mid to high 70s while we're there, I may be tempted since Easter is early this year:-)
