Toto, I don't think we are in Kansas anymore!

After we sold our home and considered renting in Manhattan, we were looking at nice / not wonderful one bedroom apts for $000- a month. Plus garage.
It is definitely not Kansas..but a bargain if you want to rent in London :)

I'd pay $3,250 per month (including mntce fees) for a 1800 square foot two bedroom apartment downtown.

You can't put a price on living in NYC.

good for you - so many of my neighbors were either born in this town or within 30 miles of it. I assume you enjoy moving around?

When DS leaves home for college in 2 years I'd love to try NY but just for a year and then move back to suburbia.

It took me a few NY visits but now DH agrees he'd like to try it too.

I don't mind moving when I am not happy where I live.
My husband was born and raised in NYC and he misses it more than I but we are both really excited about moving to Portland.
There comes a time in a persons life when it is good to get up and do something or go somewhere that is unfamiliar and new..sort of shakes things up and keeps one from being stodgey :)

The $508 rent-controlled price sounds great to me - but unfortunately you have to have been in the aparement forever - I think since before 1969 - to qualify for this.

In our building (not luxury - middle class prewar so large apartments - but no doorman) a one bedroom sublets for about $2500 per month. The two bedroom upstairs has just been put on the market for over $1.2 million - and the real estate agent says it will sell inside a month.

Yes - it;s a lot of money - but what you get for it is - in the words of the ad - priceless.

Friends live in a UWS 2 br/ 2 bath apt, 4 stories, doorman, for less than $600 - but, yes, one of them has lived there all her life...as will their son. Another friend bought a 2 br apt on UES for $1M several years ago. Yes, it has two (small) terraces, but good grief! The apt. was paid for by family members but the monthly fees were $1000/month. My little ole brain has a hard time wrapping around that concept! :-)

$1000 maintainance on a 2 bedroom apartment is very inexpensive. The standard for a middle class or "luxury" (meaning doorman) building is that the monthly maint (taxes, heat, water, staff salaries, etc) is about equivlent to the square footage of the apartment.

For a true luxury building (fully staffed with elevator ops, valet garage, pool and health club) is considerably higher.

And yes - you can live for much less other places. But - you will also be earning much less money (NYC salaries are higher than most other places) - and - you will not be in NY. If you don;t love the city and what it offers - and finance is your main consideration - you're right - you would be better off somewhere else.
