What town to stay in between Newport and Merlin OR

My 3yo and I will be traveling to Oregon soon. With help from this forum, I'm really excited about the itinerary we have. I do have a gap though that I need help filling. We're spending 3 nights in Merlin and then have a 2 night gap and then 2 nights in Newport. Any suggestions what towns to stay along the way? I'd prefer the two nights at one stop, but am looking to you experts for advice. :-)

If it helps, I enjoy quiet places. A little rustic is good too. We'll be staying in Yurts in both Newport and Merlin.

Thank you in advance!

If you've never been to the redwoods, there are many opportunities to find quiet there.

If you want a place on the coast, Bandon is a delightful town with a great beach. You might like a place such as this: http://www.beachloopvillage.com/

If you've never seen the southern Oregon coast, From Merlin drive to Brookings via 199 and then up to Bandon--it's a beautiful drive.

That sounds great! Then how long will it take to get from Bandon to Newport?

It's about 125 miles and there is a beautiful stretch that skirts the ocean starting just after Florence.

Merlin-Brookings-Bandon is about 185 miles with great ocean views between Brookings and Port Orford.

About 2 hours down US 199 from Merlin to Crescent City CA.
Take an hour or 2 to see "The Trees of Mystery"

About 110 miles from ToM to Bandon (2.5 hours)
From Bandon to Newport 125 miles (2.8 hours)
Brookings is often the warmest town in Oregon. They are having an International Kite Flying event in Brookings this weekend.

I never would have thought to go south to get north. This is great!

I was able to find a yurt at Bullards Beach for Fri night and then a Kabin at Bullards/Pt Orford for Sat night. And that's just 3 weeks away!

tomfuller - Thanks for the ToM suggestion, we'll definitely do that. I had dreamed of getting to Redwoods this trip, but it seemed too far. Now it seems all doable with enough time at each place plus leisurely driving and stopping along the way.

I'll post our itinerary (12 days total) soon!

thanks again!!
