What town in america is just plain ugly?

I am looking for opinions from travelers on the uglyist town in America. Or for that matter, in the world. This could be man made or naturally ugly.

Here are my votes:

Glendive MT.
Clifton, AZ
Atlantic City, NJ
Trenton, NJ
Tucumcari, New Mexico

Yonkers, New York...UGH!

Of course it depends on your taste, but I cannot stand Jacksonville, FL. The smell alone makes it ugly - only my opinion of course.

Ava Sep 8th, 2001 01:13 PM

Here's another vote for Jacksonville!

I don't usually respond to negative lines but couldn't resist...

Toledo, OH
Raleigh, NC
Pueblo, CO (nice setting, ugly smokestacks)
Fresno, Ca
Mel Sep 8th, 2001 05:26 PM

Paul, just curious - - what is so offensive about Raleigh, NC?? I've been to NC and just adore the state! Been to Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Wilmington, Chapel Hill and Topsail Island and am ready to move there from Michigan!

As a neighbor to Raleigh, I can't agree that it is one of the ugliest in America, but it doesn't have much to set it aside from any other town of its size. So a little boring might be a better description.

I believe Superior, Wisconsin's primary purpose in life is to make Duluth, Minnesota look good...

Suzie Sep 8th, 2001 07:21 PM

Paul,

You say Fresno cause you've never been to Delano or McFarland? (haha)

Monique Sep 8th, 2001 07:48 PM

Bakersfield CA
Indio CA
El Centro CA
Yuma AZ
Elizabeth, NJ, especially from the highway (keep your windows rolled up).

Houston, Texas. Not only is it ulgy, it stinks and is dirty. Also the foreginers that live there can't understand english nor do they care to learn.

Ima Sep 10th, 2001 07:14 AM

Re: foreigners in Houston...don't throw stones unless you can at least spell "ugly" and "foreigner" PLUS capitalize the "E" in English.

What's the point of this post? To warn us about places not to go? Or to pick a fight with residents of towns that are named?

ncgrrl Sep 10th, 2001 08:25 AM

Paul, what do you have against Raleigh??? Did someone there put a restraining order on you or something else like that? It's not a top 10 tourist attraction in the U.S., but it is a good, safe place to live. Touring Broadway shows, concerts, NHL hockey, hotbed of college sports, WUSA soccer, don't have to put your kids in private schools, plentiful and drinkable water, lakes, parks, 2 hours to the beach, 4 hours to the mountains, etc. what else do you want?

Yikes, a Durhamite defending Raleigh, what has the world come to.

x Sep 10th, 2001 08:31 AM

Not a big tourist destination but those of you who know it will have to agree:

Garfield, NJ

Yvette Sep 10th, 2001 08:37 AM

Just traveled across the US. Ugliest? Tough to say. More overrated AND boring: Charlotte. Very disappointing. The city has no soul.

Most fun: New York, Miami, New Orleans.

Most beautiful large city: San Francisco.

Thanks.
Joe Sep 10th, 2001 11:19 AM

Kokomo, IND and Gary, IND are tied.

Shopper Sep 10th, 2001 11:26 AM

I know its the cultural mecca of the US and believe me I love this city and all it has to offer but . . . you did want the ugliest - New York. UGGH! all that trash they sit out on the sidewalk can't be beautiful! Other votes for ugly are Detroit and Pittsburgh (though Pittsburgh is better than it used to be)

ILUVJOE Sep 10th, 2001 11:28 AM

Joe: Thank goodness someone else feels the way about Kokomo that I do. Went there two years ago with hubby on business. What a hole! Basically trailer parks and a WalMart.
