what to wear-seattle next week
 

Hi all? I have a quick query about functional fashion. I'll be arriving in Seattle this Saturday and will be there through Wednesday, the 27th. I want to know what kind of coat is best for the weather there right now. It's predicted to be in the high 30s to mid 40s with rain (of course) :) I live in NY and my coats are built for warmth (Down or fleece lined) but not really for dealing with everyday rain. As I will be walking around the city alot and waiting on busses, I want to be warm and dry!

I was in Seattle yesterday. It was dry but very cold. The cold in Seattle is a wet cold and then the wind blows it can be very cold. Also, I would be very prepared for rain. Maybe lots of rain. The weather in Washington state has been really weird this year. It has really run the gambit of conditons so I would bring an umbrella, scarf, warm coat, gloves, and some hardy shoes (in case of rain or snow). Seattle is such a great city. Enjoy!

Hi there, I live in Seattle and the coat I've been wearing lately is water/wind resistant parka-style raincoat with plenty of room underneath for layers for warmth. It's been too windy lately to use umbrellas (normally in the winter I wear a leather coat and use an umbrella if it's raining), so I've been sacrificing fashion lately and wearing what is basically outdoor gear downtown ;-). Since you're planning on doing a lot of walking, I'd recommend going a similar route.

I live in Seattle and have never owned rain gear. I wear a normal mid-weight 3/4 length wool coat or a fake lamb shear kind of jacket, with a scarf, hat, and gloves. Add umbrella if it's raining.

Some kind of decent warm waterproof boot would be a good idea though.

From what I've seen on the news, perhaps a hard hat and work boots would be in order.

Bring layers, including an outer layer that sheds water or an unbrella (in case of rain).

When I lived in NYC and visited Seattle at Christmas, I was surprised at how mild the weather was; I had no need for my heavy coat, overshoes, gloves, hats, or scarves (except for decoration).

Coming from NY, if you bring what you'd consider a fall coat, or raincoat with liner, you'll be fine. (Disagreeing slightly with the above post) I always wear a hat, scarf, and leather gloves.

I should have mentioned that I get overheated quickly.

I had a huge collection of sweaters in NYC, but I never wear a sweater in Seattle. Other do, of course.

I am often too warm when others complain they are cold, etc.

I put on gloves when the temperature is 35 F. or lower; however, after ten minutes of walking, I have to remove them.

I would bring a waterproof coat and dress in layers as suggested above.

I lived in Seattle for a year, and I froze all winter. I think the damp air is bone-chilling. And I spent four years in Fargo, ND where temps stay below zero for a month or two at a time. High 30 degree temps with dampness is very chilly to me.

But I also think Happytrails is right, you can have absolutely beautiful days, too.

Bring layers and have a good trip!

Have a great time in Seattle. It is amazing! Hang out in the Fremont Area or Queen Anne area.

Good parka style rain jacket. Good walking shoes. No need for thick boots..dressup in layers. It does not rain heavily in Seattle..just drizzles. Have a great time

It has been COLD here this week! Layers are your friend. If it is rainy, you might want a sweater with a shell-type raincoat over it. I personally hate umbrellas, especially near the waterfront where it can be windy. For work, I've been wearing a pea-coat style wool/cashmere coat.

I'll second the comfortable shoes. Seattle is way more casual as far as dress goes. Think Eddie Bauer. LOL.
