what to wear in So.cal.

Coming from Boston where linen, pastels and light shoes go into hiding on Labor Day never to be seen again until Memorial Day, I am not sure what to bring to LA and SD this week. Any suggestions?

In California, anything goes!! It will be warm so do not pack away your summer clothes. Everybody will still be in summer dresses, shorts and flip flops:) I am going to Boston in a few weeks perhaps you can tell me what is appropriate to wear?

If there was ever a travel destination where it was accurate to say "It really does NOT matter what you wear," Los Angeles would have to be it.

ediemay: years ago we became friends with a couple from Louisiana who were living here in the So. Cal. desert for a couple of years. When we recently visited them we were talking about the culture shock they experienced when they first moved here.

His big shock: "As far as you can see, YOU CAN SEE."

Her big shock: "Y'all wear white shoes all year long!"

It's still hot out here. Bring your summer clothes. And have a great trip!

It is really hot hear on the coast in San Diego during the day. Nights are cooler.

September is usually our warmest month, and based on today's temperatures (100 at the beach in Santa Monica), it should be no exception. This evening, even the "take out the sweaters" is a joke. It's 79 at 11:20 p.m. at Santa Monica airport, and supposed to remain hot all week. Serious hake and bake weather right now.

In other words, wear what you'd wear back east BEFORE Labor Day.

Looks like it will be hot in San Diego all week, too. Just bring clothes to be cool and comfortable. As someone said, bring a light sweater just in case you are by the ocean. Most evenings it is cooler by the coast but not tonight. I live inland in San Diego county and it was 100 today at my house but was almost that hot at the beaches (they usually are at least 10-15 degrees cooler). Hope you have a good trip.

It's very hot in San Diego and will be all week. Yesterday, at our house, from which we can see the ocean, it was 98F We went to the beach to cool down, but it was 88F there and windy, but warm wind. The ocean water temp is 72F, with quite big waves. When we took my daughter's friend home to Poway, it was 108F there.

Today, it's already 79F at 8:57am.

Thank you all for your prompt responses.I guess it's unaminous;summer clothes for sure. That's great, since I haven't even thought about fall attire yet.
lvitaly,
Dark cottons are definitely the rule of thumb for September in Boston. We still have warm days(sometimes very warm)this month

Sorry...
as well as chilly ones, and the nights are fairly cool so bring a sweater or light jacket. This is New England and you never know what tomorrow will be like(nor do the weathermen).

Thanks, Ediemay :)

ediemay, we used to call those dark but lightweight fall cottons "transitionals." It's a concept I haven't thought of for many years, living here in northern California, where we keep our sweaters out all summer.

;) "...living here in northern California, where we keep our sweaters out all summer." - and our shorts out all winter for those occasional heat spells in February where the mercury tops 90.
