I kind of agree with what the previous writer worte. However, as New Yorker, I can tell you that it can get REALLY hot and humid here in the summer. It can be very, very uncomfortable, especially when going in and out of subways. As a woman, I would highly recommend skirts and sun dresses. They will keep you coolest and still look nice. If you are going somewhere nice for a meal, then bring along one nice dress. Definitely wear very, very comfortable shoes, New Yorkers are very use to walking for hours. My mother in law always moans when she walks with us--she isn't use to it. If your shoes aren't comfortable, you won't have a good time. Although I adore flip flops, the street can get mighty dirty.
I saw a great packing list specifically for NYC at

Absolutely. It is very humid in New York in the summer, and you will see that even female office workers wear flip flops, with a sundress or a skirt and blouse. You should be aware, though, that many restaurants, theatres, etc. have the air conditioning blasting - so you may want to carry a light shawl or a sweater if you are going indoors.

One other important thing - all women in New York in the summer have a pedicure, and their toenails are painted. It is very inexpensive to do here - local places will do a manicure and a pedicure for only about $30, and almost everyone goes at least once a month once we start wearing sandals.
