As a fashion ignoramus, I have no idea what crops are.
New York in July and August can be hot and humid and the subway stations, not the cars, can get extremely hot.
I would dress to your comfort. There are only a handful of expensive restaurants that will not seat you. Add even though I know there are flip-floppers who swear by them, I would at the very least wear sandals with supports if not shoes. Between the millions of people and the vehicular traffic the city does get dirty.

Yes - they're fine - but assume pants have to be cleaned or washed each time you wear them - often not practical on vacation.
Most important are comfy, supportive well-boken in walking shoes and a sturdy folding umbrella.

I believe judy is referring to cropped pants.
I would never wear white pants or cropped pants while on vacation as one small spot of dirt or anything and the crisp clean look is gone. I agree with djk's advice.

Cropped pants are fine (except for a truly elegant restauant) but I would stick with darker colors.
There's a reason people in New York wear so much black. People who usually travel by car often don;t realize how much more dirt there is if you're walking everywhere (and trekking up and down subway steps that are washed only by the last rain).

i live there part-time and it always seems to be a heat wave when I'm there in summer. first, new yorkers do not look as chic as you might imagine. They dress for walking and comfort. Weekends, they are slobs, esp the men (sorry, guys, but true) Jeans will be too hot. think airy skirts, "wife beater" T- shirts, a little cotton sweater you can stash in your bag and pretty sandals you can walk in. Everyone WILL have flip flops on, but i think they're hard to walk long distance in. Crops (capris?) are fine, though they're not my thing. you'll see lots of people walking around in their workout gear, but then you see someone all pulled together and you want to crawl under a rock. Check the 10 day weather forecast and plan accordingly. It could be 90...it could be 70

Sounds like those who have worn white were playing in the dirt.
I wear white often in summer whether in NYC or elsewhere and these don't get any dirtier than if wearing beige, yellow, lime green or even black. They're selling white most everywhere this year, especially denim (not my choice), but plenty of cotton and linen... it's summertime! Just walk thru a Gap, Bloomies or a shop on Madison Ave.
If you want to wear white, long or crop... go ahead. Should they get dirty, drop them off at nearest dry cleaner (there's one every block or two) and you'll have them back in an hour.
Enjoy your holiday!

I've been amazed by how few New Yorkers wear shorts or cropped pants. When the weather gets hot they go for skirts and dresses. On the other hand, plenty of tourists wear shorts and crops and there's no onus attached to it (ok, maybe a little). But wear what you like--no one really cares anymore.

I've lived full time in NYC for the past eleven years...I would highly recommend not wearing white cropped pants in the heat of the summer in the city.
Most residents wear very casual skirts w/ tank tops or little comfortable dresses in darker colors or black or khaki cropped pants or even ankle length skinny pants. Jeans and black jeans are good year round to almost everywhere these days except top restaurants. Shorts aren't popular either unless you're going biking in Central Park. Wear comfortable shoes...sandals are fine, the younger set lives in flip flops. White pants/jeans are fine at night to go to a restaurant in the summer, but they're really seen more in the Hamptons than on the streets during the day. Hope that helps...

I agree with wearing what is comfortable. I usually wear black jeans or pants, even crops.
Waiting in the subways can be stifling so try to wear something that breathes. Loose fitting natural fibers are a good choice.

Of whom? The actors couldn't care less what you wear, nor could the theatre owners. Other patrons? Sorry, as long as I'm clean (and maybe neat), the fact that YOU don't consider my dress "appropriate" is too d**n bad. I'd rather sit next to someone in clean shorts than someone all dressed up and wearing too much perfume.

I hate to break it to you, but she IS a tourist.

What's wrong with being a tourist?
I sat at a table next to the window at Blue Fin, looking out at all the people walking by in Times Square.
I came to the conclusion that:
1) most of them were tourists
2) there was a wide range of clothing and shoes
3) no one knew anyone outside of their travel group
4) there were no Fashion Police in sight
5) no one cared what the next person was wearing
6) some NY Fodorites would probably not approve of anything they pulled out of their suitcases to wear
Be comfortable and be especially kind to your feet.
