What to wear?
Will be in NY 12/26/01 thru 01/02/02 and have never been there. I don't want to feel too out of place. How dressed up should you be for a Sat. afternoon matinee @ The Majestic? How about dress for New Year's Eve in Times Square? Any other tips on what type clothing to bring? Thanks!
|
Sat matinees are casual, slacks and sweaters are fine.New Years Eve in Times Square-warm clothing!no one cares what you wear...just wear mittens, scarf, coat ,warm socks and boots/shoes (party hats are optional:) ... you will be standing in close crowds, be warm and safe~Happy New Year~
|
You can't go wrong in NY wearing black--pants, boots, turtleneck,& coat:) If you MUST wear a color, be sure it is red:) New Yorkers wear jeans on the weekend with black, nights all black, just don't wear sneakers, I think this is the same as if you were going to London or Paris-I see people telling American tourists to wear the same thing:) You will have a ball, NY is a great place to visit, the people(despite rumors here and there) are great and friendly and if given the chance will talk your ear off! No better place to visit at Christmas time, decorations are wonderful, Just be sure to wear warm clothes, it is wet and cold today...Happy New Year~

Ah, finally. I feel like the Maytag guy. It is, of course, black, black and more black. And just to pin it down, check your plaids at the NJ border. Then, go to NYC and have fun, knowing you are dressed for the occasion. Oh, if they were all this easy! Ciao
|
This is New York, where you can see every type of person wearing every type of clothes, including the lemmings who think they have to dress in all black or else someone might actually notice them.

As long as your genitals are hidden, you'll be fine in anything in NYC.
|
Wow,Ann,that was kinda hostile!
Lemmings? genitals? try to keep things in a holiday mood for cryin out loud.
|
Leone, you are so funny with the NJ plaids~ I was out last night, casual dinner with friends...could not decide between which black top to wear, out of 100 black tops:) so I was soooo adventurous!! I wore dark red velvet!! All night I was so conscious of that red!Imagine if I wore plaid, I would seize up and die! **Brenda- it is sad but true, we are comfy in black, it goes everywhere and with everything, and you can pack so much easier not having to match things...have a fun time in the big city~ and believe me, there are lots more nice people in NY than there are on some of these sites...if you know what I mean:)
|
I appreciate your humor, Ann. Keep it coming.
|
I'm sorry - I was just funning about the plaids! But "C" - I bet you looked terrific, black or no black. Now, Ann, I wish you too a great holiday ... as I move along on my fur-covered feet, my small tail a-wagging, mass migrating to an eventual drowning in the sea. You've not painted a happy ending for me, so I'd best play and make merry while time permits. So, in Paris next week, I shall drink a toast with suitable bubbly to one and all, and if you're by the De Lutece on Ille St. Louis, just give a call, and I'll buy you a coup too. I'm listening to Piaf all week, just to be "in the mood." I wish you all a safe and prosperous NY 2002 as well. And if the IRS is tuned in, could you add a "DC" check-off box on your fab 1040 - we could use the bread, guys. Ciao, L

Leone,

I really envy your life -- you're always off on some grand adventure. I, on the other hand, just got back from an awful convention in Anaheim.

Have a wonderful trip and let us know when you're back home safely.

|
Leone, if you are the Maytag guy, you are asleep after an all-night drinking binge at Markt. Plaids are definitely in this season, especially if they are from Burberry! Haven't you seen Anna "Now is the Winter of our Discontent" Wintour wearing her Vivienne Westwood tartan balaclava helmet to lunch at Danube? Oh, Leone, I think you need a tumble in my Fridigaire drier to shake you out of your stupor. Ciao bello, John G.

Hi, Arabella - well, your name will be on one of those toasts, you may be sure. I'm sorry about Anaheim - I did time there myself in 1997, cut short only by the demise of a friend (I think it was her way of doing that last nice act ... getting me the hell out of that place). I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday and a safe and terrific 2002. Life has been good to me this year, inspite of the attack here in DC, and I remain strongly hopeful for a grander future for us all. Take care, have a good one, and of course, ciao. My vow for next year ... nicer and more digestible. L

Brenda I think you got excellent advice from the first poster. For a matinee I'd wear a sweater and skirt or sweater and pants, and some kind of real shoes vs. sneakers. Times Square REALLY dress only for the elements, unless you also have or buy a silly hat, crown, or something for festivity's sake.

My most important clothing tip to you has to do with your feet: find shoes with thick rubber soles. Unless your plans are atypical you will be on your feet on very hard surfaces almost all the time. Find something that's not sneakers (tho sneakers are FINE for Times Square) that's good for walking.

There are old threads on this board & Europe board about shoes.

And--welcome.

Leone-(Sorry Brenda for getting completely off of the subject)---don't forget to go to the chocolatier across the street from the Lutece, there is a cheese shop and a chocolate shop, and on the corner is a good cafe to stand and have a cup of the strongest coffee I have ever tasted in my life! And right at the end of the street from the hotel(rue Ille St Louis), facing you is Notre Dame, it is such an unbelievable sight, no photo can do it justice! And be on the lookout for the incredible mimes on the little footbridge to ND, and on the little street next to it...have a wonderful time~someday we will be there at the same time and will toast in person~Candice

Thanks, C - I've printed a copy of your message and will have it with me - I'm there 28th-1st, should anyone wish to take me up on that offer of champagne. This is sort of old home week for me ... quick trip to see a few things, wnadre around a few haunts, bring in the NY, and then get the heck out to CDG for my flight back January 1. This time I'm doing it strictly with Cheap Eats ... no one and two stars now. One companion is doing Taillvent before I arrive ... a good thing too ... I told her too pricey for me this time. Do take care, have a great holiday, and will catch you on the upside. Ciao, Joseph (keep it a secret, :>)

Leone-a cheap eat that we discovered years ago and always go back to,they remember us now!> Petit Benoit on rue Benoit right off of Blvd St Germain and rue Jacob..A real neighborhood place, love the staff, the owner hangs out and makes sure everyone is happy, the food is homey and very good, and someone will always end up chatting with you...I think you might like it...Have fun~C
|
C - yes, I know your restuarnt - not far from where I lived at one time. We'll be walking past it on the 29th - will see what the possibilities are for lunch. If you have the Cheap Eats book handy, we're reserved at Au Petit Tonneau (7eme), L Petit Nicois (7eme), Le Bistrot Du Dome (4eme), and Le Bistrot De Breteuil (NYE - the owner has told me he is offering a special dinner, and afterward we'll walk over to the 8eme for firewalks ... then home for 2 hours of sleep, and limo to CDG, and collapse). Our hotel has been very nice about communicating about reservations and handling details for me. The only problem so far has been Delta ... I have this flight and one later for a return to Cape Town, and then that's it for me ... Delta will be flying without me. I'll collect my FF miles (I have a couple of spots in mind). Their attitude makes United look like the sunshine kids!! Take care, have a great holiday, and we'll toast one to you on NYE. Ciao, J/L

Leone-I'm taking off for Ireland the day after Christmas, so think of me on New Year's Eve, as I'll be drinking until, as a wise man named Gary once famously said, I bleed.

And, of course, I shall spend the hours before hitting the pub trying to decide between wearing my Levis, running shoes and a sweatshirt, or going in an all black leather ensemble.
|
...and with that black, black, black, might I add pearls, pearls, pearls.

Tall shoes always look hot.

~~just from a guys perspective~~

Have Fun!
Paul
