What to tip on a $400 bottle of wine
 

I recently went to dinner with my wife and another couple, we were celebrating our 1 year anniversary. I took us to a upscale restaurant in NYC. The food portion of our check came to $260.00 and the beverage came to $445.00 including a very special bottle of wine that cost $395.00. The total bill not including tax came to $705.00 and I left a 20% ($141.00) tip <BR><BR>After leaving I thought about why I left 20% on a bottle of wine that took no more time or effort to serve then a $5.00 bottle of water. <BR>The food portion of the bill consisted of serving appetizers, salad, sherbet, first course, main course and dessert for four people took a lot of effort and deserved the 20% ($52.00) tip. <BR>But, for the $395.00 bottle of wine the waiter walk over to the table and showed me the bottle, opened it, let me taste it and with my approval poured the other three glasses. That all took about 3 minutes for a $79.00 tip. Does that make sense?<BR>

What is with all the restaurant trolls! Get a job!

It makes no less sense than leaving a like amount on food that costs the same price. Does it take more effort to serve a fifty $$ steak than a 12 $$ one? Not unless there's table-side service involved.<BR><BR>Undoubtedly, many will disagree with this but--for that particlar expense, you did the right thing.<BR><BR>Tippy

Wow, you guys know how to tip!!! I wish I made 20% tips when I waitressed. Maybe we are cheap in my part of Canada, but usually I only got about 10%, I usually only leave about 15%.

I have to admit I wasnt a very good waitress though, I spilled a pitcher on clients once.

I dond't know about any of you, But I personally hate the practice of tips.From all the posts on that topic, I'd say it's another source of stress that we don't need. Here I am casting my vote for the abolishment of tips.

If you can afford a $395 bottle of wine, you can afford the tip. Just do it.
