What to see on Broadway

Everyone on fodor's has been so helpful. We are now deciding on what to see. We would like to see one play and one musical. Thoughts on The Constant Wife or Glengarry Glen Ross and Mamma Mia or Movin Out. We are open to other ideas as well. Thanks

Play -- The Pillowman with Billy Crudup and Jeff Goldblum. Dark. Disturbing. Hilarious. Memorable.

Musical -- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels or All Shook Up.

Enjoy!

Choosing between the ones you mention, I'd take Glengarry Glen Ross over Constant Wife due to the incredible cast and ensemble acting -- but The Constant Wife is a very good play as well (I haven't seen this current production) and is surprisingly "modern" for a play written 80 years ago! But if you can possibly get tickets for Doubt -- DO IT!

Of the musicals -- I'd take Mamma Mia over Movin Out (which is really more of a dance show only). But I'd go for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels or if you haven't seen it, The Producers over either one.

Of course, these questions are difficult when we don't know what sorts of things you like.

I'd pick Glengarry Glen Ross as well. We also saw Going to St. Ives, which was excellent.

I didn't love either Mamma Mia (too canned) or Moving Out(too contrived).

As Patrick said, it's tough to know what to recommend since we don't know your tastes. Having said that...
For a straight play, I'd pick Doubt over both The Constant Wife and Glengarry Glen Ross. It's best thing on Broadway right now!
For a musical, I'd be hard-pressed to name just one. Rather, I'd say, pick from this group (listed alphabetically):
Avenue Q, Chicago, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Hairspray, Movin' Out, The Producers.

I vote for Glengary Glen Ross. Great cast.

I saw Sweet Charity when I was there in May and was pleasantly surprised. I generally just show up at TKTS in Times Square and see what's available with the best seats. They did have The Producers and Hairspray but with obstructed views. If there's anyway you can get tixs to Spamalot, go for it!!

loved Movin' Out, but not Mama Mia...

My husband and 16 year old niece enjoyed Hairspray so much we were singing the lyrics to ....Wake up Baltimore ..several days after seeing the production.

Hi;
We recently saw Sweet Charity a couple of weeks ago. It was our 1st broadway show and absolutely LOVED it. Christina Appplegate did a great job!

We just got back from NYC and saw All Shook Up and The Producers. All Shook Up was enjoyable - someone described it as cute which and I concur. The Producers was great. Enjoyed every minute of it and laughed constantly. If you get the chance I'd definitely see The Producers.

I'm not sure when you are going, but Glengarry is closing on August 28. If your trip is before then, it is absolutely worth it to see this cast!

Depending on your taste for musicals, you might also consider the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It's gotten a lot of attention and is supposed to be very funny and charming.

Enjoy! :)

You don't mention when you're trip is, but if tickets were available my absolutely first choice recommendation for a musical would be Wicked. To me, it has all the elements that exemplify a great broadway musical. If you can't get tickets to that, Mamma Mia is certainly a cute, fun show, and I think you can get discounts for it. I did not enjoy Moving Out, and don't consider it a typical musical because the songs are all sung by one piano player and there is no dialogue, so it's sometimes difficult to follow.
