What to see/do from north Texas area to SD (Mt. Rushmore area)
We are taking two of our grandkids (both 10, cousins) to SD in June. We are driving from North Texas through OK, KS, and NE to Custer. We have a good idea of what we want to do once we get to Custer where we've rented a cabin and have a long list of things to do.
We will drive approximately 8 hrs for two days to get there and would really appreciate advice on good places to stop, eat, see. We figure that York, NE should be about half way and have reserved the Hampton Inn for one night there. We are stockpiling movies, books, games, iPad, iTouch, as we hear it's a long boring drive. Thanks in advance for any ideas, suggestions, hints. We want this to be a great trip for all four of us. Sandy (in Denton) |
I live in Omaha and I am familiar with York. Not much to do out there. I would spend the extra 75-80 minutes and head east to Omaha on I-80 and see the Omaha Zoo. Stop at the Mahoney exit about 25 miles west of Omaha and see the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Museum and Mahoney State Park. I don't know your dates in Nebraska, but the College World Series is in Omaha from the June 21st to the 30th, I believe.

The Oklahoma City Memorial is worth stopping for. If you happen to be there at night, it is worth going back and seeing it again with muted lighting--very moving.
We've made that drive a few times and that's about all I can think of. |
If your schedule allows, take a detour off I-35 to Hutchinson, Kansas to see the Cosmosphere:
www.cosmo.org And/or the the Kansas Underground Salt Museum: http://www.undergroundmuseum.org/index.php Omaha is my hometown and hawkeye_hank has great suggestions. |
Eat at Pop's 66 in Arcadia, OK(just north of OKC).
Also good Cattlemen's Steakhouse, Big Truck Taco, or Mutts(gourmet hot dog joint owned by Big Truck Taco). |
Thanks for the suggestions. We have put Pop's 66 on our list, think the kids would love the sodas . . . also, the underground salt dome. We might try to do that, along with one of the zoos on the way home.
Anything between York and Custer? Sandy (in Denton) |
Arcadia(where Pop's is located) is a tiny town in OK. The town suffered a pretty big hit about 2 hours ago from a Tornado. Pop's is just outside the town. I don't know exactly yet where the tornado struck, so be sure and call and see if everything is ok. We've had massive tornadoes all evening and still ongoing. Luckily for me, they are all about 75-125 miles away. Supposed to be more of the same thing tomorrow.

Spiro . . . just saw some tv coverage of your storms, glad you are safe, heard more are forecast. Stay safe!
Thanks for the heads-up, Sandy (in Denton) |
Thnx,
I have a cellar in my house. We are pretty use to them. Our little town Spiro, OK had an F5 hit in 1976, I have never forgotten it. There actually hasn't been that many F5's to hit the US. |
