surfing in San Diego

We will be taking a family trip to California May 8 thru May 18. Our 4 teenagers' only request is to learn to surf! We are from Colorado and they snowboard all the time, but never have surfed. I need suggestions on how, where, etc??

This is where I get a lot of my surf gear along with Rusty's a couple doors down..
Great place LJ Surf Shop and make sure the kids go kayaking in LJ too.
Jeff's burgers in LJ Shores or the Cheese Shop for the best deli sandwiches.

My daughter (age 17) had a lesson with Surf Diva in La Jolla (surfdiva.com) last June. She took the "Party Wave" lesson (first time) and was able to get up on the board. The adult class included all ages and everyone seemed to be having a great time... I hung out and watched (also fun). La Jolla Shores is a beautiful spot with great swimming too.

Can you tell us what areas you'd be going to along the coast?
