What To See and Do in the Grand Rapids Area
 
My husband, college-age son and I are finally getting around to visiting Mount Rushmore this year, probably in May. I'd appreciate some input. We live in Ohio, and the simplest way to get to SD seems to be to fly from Pittsburgh airport to Rapid City. In checking airfare, it's less costly to go from Wednesday to Saturday.

I'd like to take a bus tour on Thursday to see the 'main events' of Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. As the itinerary maker of the family, that leaves me with half of Wednesday (the day we arrive) and all day Friday to fill in the blanks. We'd leave early Saturday. What other things would we do or should we see while we're there? We love taking in the sights but wouldn't be do anything too strenuous like horseback riding.

Any suggestions would be very welcome. I've always received amazing advice on this forum, and followed it which has led to some of the most memorable moments of my life.

You're not gonna be in Grand Rapids!! You might want to ask the moderator to change the title or start a new one so people know you're talking about Mt.Rushmore, etc. LOL
And you'd better lock in those cheaper fares. You never know if what you saw this week will ever be that price again.

My wife and I are planning on seeing the area around Rapid City in August. I Googled the Black Hills, Custer State Park, and the Badlands for information. I purchased Moons guidebook, but it doesn't have much more than the websites or the tourist brochures you can order from the SD tourism department. Spirobulldog has a pretty good trip report on the area. You should be able to find something to fill your free days from the report he has.

Thanks, Gretchen & Oklacat, I will repost. I hadn't had time to revisit this topic until today. I will follow the link you posted, Oklacat, thanks for that and also, enjoy your trip to Rapid City. Just made plane reservations, so getting excited!
