What to see and do in San Diego?

My family and I are going to San Diego on June 29 for 2 nights and 3 days. What are the must sees for the first time visitor? We want a hotel on the beach under $200.00 a night. We plan on going to Tijuana for a couple of hours one day, is there a Hard Rock Cafe or Planet Hollywood there? Is Tijuana safe? We've been to Matamoros, Mexico before thats just over the border from Brownsville, Texas and didn't feel that we were in danger. Please help.
Thanks!

My favorites in San Diego: Balboa Park, City Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Coronado Bridge, Cabrillo Nat Mon (note -- this ABSOLUTELY closes at 5:00 pm!!), Torrey Pines Beach and Preserve, San Diego Mission, Downtown shopping, La Jolla caves.

There's a Hard Rock in La Jolla and a Planet Hollywood in Horton Plaza (downtown area).

If you've been to Matamoros, there's probably no point in seeing Tijuana as well. Go to Old Town San Diego, instead.

Hi, You might check at the foot of broadway by the waterfront to see if the Navy is giving tours of any Ships - It's a freebie and kind of interesting Also
for a quiet day I use to take my family to Shelter Island (out on the west end of Rosecrans Blvd) and feed the Gulls.
There is always Sea World at Mission Bay...
Have Fun !!!!!!!!
The ferry to Coronado Island is cool. Horton Plaza is great if you like malls.

I'd skip Tijuana.

Hi Ann - Tijuana is a good day trip, but you'll probably be ready to leave after only a couple of hours. There's a Hard Rock Cafe, but I don't remember a Planet Hollywood being there. You shouldn't have any problems with safety, but, like anywhere, be aware of where you're at and don't flash the cash. Would suggest NOT driving into Mexico, but, either taking the San Diego Trolley or driving to the border and parking your car at one of the 'last stop before the border' lots and walking across into Mexico. You'll be glad you did, especially on your return to the US...traffic is horrendous, especially if you're traveling on a Friday-Saturday-Sunday or holiday.

Enjoy your stay in San Diego...it's really a very beautiful city and has so much to offer.

Dear Ann,
We love San Diego. Skip Tijuana - it's not worth the trouble - with only a few days in San Diego there are too many other wonderful things to do. Balboa park is wonderful as is the Zoo and Sea World - each of these is a day in itself and Horton Plaza is the best mall around.
We have stayed at the Marriott Marina at Seaport Village but may run you more than 200./night. But the location is perfect. You could try Islandia or Bahia on Mission Bay but they may be high 190's/night. Have fun! San Diego is a wonderful city (if you go to Old Town don't forget to have some hand made tortillas).
L.Lowe

We were in San Diego for two days. We did the Zoo & Old Town one day and the Wild Animal Park & Seaport the next day. Great city!
