What to see and do in Boston....
 

I will be going with my wife to Boston June 14th - 17th. Any recommendations? I'd like to walk the Freedom Trail, and we are staying at the Sheraton downtown.

Also, what are some good places to get a nice Lobster dinner...reasonably. <BR>

There are tons of things to do and see in Boston. It is a very easy city to walk, however walking the entire freedom trail over to Charlestown is a long walk, but worth it if you enjoy walking. Other things - go up in the Prudential or Hancock buildings for a great view of the city, and out to the mountains of New hampshire. Visit the Fine Arts musueum, or the Isabelle Gardner. Take a ride on one of the land-water 'duck' boat tours. Walk around the North End, and pick out an Italian Restaurant for dinner. Buy a picnic lunch and eat it in the Boston Gardens. Take a whale watch cruise. Spend an afternoon at Quincy market. Stroll along Newbury street - I could go on and on!

Let me toss in a few other things..you can go to theatre in tthe evening..take an Odessy Cruise for lunch around Boston Harbor, when you get off go to Quincy Market, take a Duck Tour, or a trolley tour. I'm sure your wife would like to shop Newbury Street and have lunch at one of the sidewalk cafes and people watch....again...welcome to Boston.

We were just there last March.. Duck tours weren't operating then, but we did enjoy the Trolley Tour which is hop on hop off and you can manage to get to a lot of interesting stops along the Freedom trail without traversing the entire thing. My husband loved the USS Constitution and the museum. I loved the New England Aquarium, Fanieul Hall and Quincy Market... frankly I could have spent another week there. <BR>We had a to die for Lobster dinner (with steamers) at Legal Seafoods across from the aqaurium... but also we loved the sea food at Crazy Fish across the street from Fanieul Hall. Have fun in Boston we really loved it.

I need to correct dougd - <BR> <BR>There is no place called "Boston Gardens." There is the Boston Garden (aka the Fleet Center) and there is the Boston Public Gardens (a park). I admit this is a pet peeve of mine and let it go if it comes up in a conversation between local Bostonians (we know what we mean to each other), but if you suggest to a non-local the Boston Garden(s), he will be directed to a sports arena, not some place to have a picnic.

Was just in the old bean this past weekend. <BR>Dinners- East Coast Grill, Hammersley's Bistro. Both excellent and fairly priced for the high quality food. <BR>Highlights- MFA- I thought it is better than NY Met and I'm a NY'er. Gardner was worth seeing once but between the two, MFA is superior. Allow at least 3 hrs including nice outside lunch there. I figured I could just walk up to the Duck Tour on a monday morning but it was sold out most of the day so I didn't get to do it. Fanuil Hall still pretty worthless. No lobster at either restaurant I went to- Legal Seafood's a no-brainer for that though there probably is someplace with more local charm.

For "local charm" for seafood, see if you can find the "no name" restaurant on the fish pier. It's past the Anthony's Pier 4 restaurant. Look for a pier with a long line of people and then ask them what they're standing in line for. If it's "no name," you're in the right place. <BR>Try the Museum of Science. My kids rate it as one of the best in the country on their list. (Yes, my kids really do rate science museums!)

Before you do anything else - take a Duck Tour!

In town, there is also the barking crab. In Cambridge, THE SUMMER SHACK owned by the famous chef Jasper White. If you take a short drive to Kittery, Maine, know for outlet shopping is my favorite place: The lobster pound at chauncy creek-you go down a ramp and sit at tables along the creek. You pick your own lobster and you may bring whatever they don't sell. For me that means wine, goat cheese, olives, bread.
