What to see along the Gulf Coast of FL, esp the Panhandle?
DH and I are planning a rd trip for early May from Marco Island to Pensacola and back. Time isn't an issue. Have never been to the Gulf coast beyond Sarasota. Just sight seeing. Thinking about Cedar Key, Apalach, Destin, Seaside, Panama City, Pensacola, not necessarily stopping in each place. Is the St. Pete/Clearwater Beach area worth a stop? How about Tallahassee?
Thanks all,
isy

Many of those places are worth a stop, depending on your interests. Are you saying you're from Marco Island, and are driving to Pensacola and are open to destinations in between the two?
I would stop in St. Pete/Clearwater at the Don Cesar, spend time on the beach, and go to the Salvador Dali museum. Then I would drive up to the Beaches of South Walton (Seagrove, Seaside, Rosemary Beach, etc.), and eat out and lay on the beach.

Make a stop in Tarpon springs and stroll through the downtown, Little Greece. If you can, have a meal in one of the Greek restaurants.
Homosassa Springs is a nice stop. While we were there we saw Manatees in the clear water of the spring and also a couple of sharks. The sharks weren't suppose to be there in the fresh water of the spring, but whadda ya going to tell a shark.

Highway 98, the main route to the panhandle, passes within about 30 miles of Tallahassee. Take a side trip to see the state capital and see where they decide how to spend your money.
There are 12 galleries, 69 landmarks, and 17 museums within 10 miles of the city center. Search out a couple and enjoy.
Just out of Ft. Walton Beach is the Air Force Armament museum. If you have ever been in the military or know someone who was, this museum may be a worthwhile stop.

Here is a link to a post I made about things to do and see in the Tallahassee/Panhandle area. Scroll down to the last post on the thread. If you have any questions, I will be glad to help if I can.
