What to do with one full day in Austin?
 

We will be traveling to Austin for work this coming week and need suggestions for something to do with our one free day - Sunday. We were thinking of a walking tour of the city in the morning and then maybe getting out to the country to see the scenery. Does anyone have any suggestions about hiking trails? Or perhaps something else to do with this one full day? We are getting a rental car. We will have our evenings free, but we want a good plan for Sunday. Thanks!

You have many options. Here just a few ideas:

- You can certainly spend a full day just in Austin. Visit the Capitol Building, two or three museums, walk through Zilker Park and be on Sixth Street from the afternoon.

- You can make a daytrip to San Antonio (1:20 driving time).

- You can drive into Texas Hill Country (1:00 - 1:30 driving time). Fredricksburg and Luckenbach will be doable, together with a visit of a winery or two.

If you've got a rental car, you should head out to the Hill Country. I'd recommend going out to Fredricksburg. Don't miss going to Rustlin' Rob's to try all the various sauces, dips, fudge, spices, etc. that they sell. Just down the street from Rustlin' Rob's is an old "five and dime" (whose name I can't remember) which is really fun to walk through. There's lots of other great shops and restaurants and you might enjoy an afternoon of music at the Rock Box (www.rockboxtheater.com) Finally, for a dose of hiking, head out to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area just about 20 miles from Fredericksburg.
For an evening activity in Austin, you might enjoy going to watch the UT Longhorns baseball team. Their upcoming evening games are on March 2nd (Texas Independence Day) and March 9th.

If we did go to San Antonio, do you have suggestions for a good's day itinerary and somewhere good to eat?

Since you are in a car, I would visit two or three of the missions. http://www.nps.gov/SAAN/index.htm

In downtown, I would walk around Riverwalk (if you like, do a boat trip) and the nearby Alamo.

Also walk over to the Spanish Governor's Palace.

Finally, I would recommend driving slowly through King William's Historic District.

For lunch, there are many options. Very typical would be Guenther House in King William's District. https://www.guentherhouse.com

Otherwise, there are dozens of restaurants along the Riverwalk.

Lunch in San Antonio -- Boudro's for Riverwalk, open-air dining, tableside-prepared outstanding guacamole, and prickly pear cactus margaritas! Ahhhhhhhh......wish I were there now!

If you only have one free day in Austin, I'd spend it in Austin!

If you were here in the spring I'd say by all means get out and enjoy the hill country scenery, but it's February and everything out there is pretty much brown right now. And Austin has plenty to keep you happily occupied and well fed on your one free day! Town lake has a good hike and bike trail, Zilker Park and Barton Springs are always popular, there is live music in many venues, you can rent bicycles or do seg-way tours, there are many good museums,restaurants and the Capitol to tour. I'd suggest going to Austin360.com or checking out any of the many very good Austin threads here by doing a search for Austin using the search feature at the top of this page.
