What to do in St. Louis??
 

I will be going to St. Louis with my husband on business in September. We will be staying at The Westin downtown. He will be busy during the day and will need to use the car. Is there stuff to do around there within walking distance?? Any must go to restuarants that are moderately priced?

Ally, You could visit the Gateway Arch, which has a great Museum at the base underground. Lacledes Landing is very near the Arch. It has good restaurants and some shops. I think the Medical Quakery Museum is still there.<BR><BR>Union Station is the remodeled Train Station, that has many shops and restaurants.<BR><BR>There is a Tram that will take you around the City. Your Hotel can tell you more about it.<BR><BR>The City Art Museum is in Forest Park. Take a cab to get there.<BR><BR>Lots of great Restaurants in St. Louis. Prices vary.<BR><BR><BR><BR>

Do not miss the Gateway Arch and Westward Expansion Museum at its base. The arch is very close to the LaClede's Landing part of town. It has some good restaurants and is a historic part of the city. Take a cruise on one of the sightseeing or gambling riverboats which also dock in that area. Go to Union Station. Lots of restaurants and shops there. You will enjoy St. Louis.

Your location is great and convenient to all the downtown sites.<BR><BR>If you want to go to the nicer part of town, head over to Clayton/Ladue. The interstate runs right past your hotel about 3 blocks away, and takes you straight there.<BR>The Plaza Frontenac Mall is at Clayton Rd and Lindbergh Rd (on highway 67), and the Galleria is off Clayton Rd along interstate 64.<BR><BR>Forest Park is worth a quick driving tour if nothing else and is between downtown and the Clayton area.

Go to a ball game, if the Cards are at home. You can also taxi over to the A-B brewery and take a tour/beer tasting and (maybe) pet some Clydesdales. Be careful where you go in downtown St. Louis and when you go there -- check with your hotel. Especially at night there is a relatively narrow corridor of safety for a lone female. That said, all the sights suggested by the above posters are accessible and fun - enjoy!

When I visited St. Louis, I took a side trip to Alton, IL. It is a neat little town on the Missippi, had some great antique shops and good restaurants. A quiet Missippi River town. Oh, and I believe they have a casino riverboat there now. If I remember correctly, Alton is less than an hour from St. Louis. Well Joan - that's why I've come here as a starting point - to do some research and get some opinions from others who have been there. If you're sick of people asking these kind of questions you're in the wrong place!

St Louis is a fun town. For a daytime trip go to Kenner Plaza, it is right in the middle of downtown, and you can do a walking tour of the city. You can pick up and illistrated a map and follow the red line painted on the sidewalk. You can tour downtown and the map explains the sites you are passing. The Art Museum and the Zoo which are both free is only a short cab ride and well worth the trip. Plan at least several hours for a good visit. Another great place to visit is the Missouri Botanical Garden this is also a short cab ride. This is one of my absolute favorite places. For a fun evening go to Laclede Landing to the old Spaghetti Factory for dinner and then take a carriage ride. If you are interested in shopping the Galeria is very nice and again a short cab ride. And if you are a sports fan you might catch the Cardinals in town. There are also alot of great little restuarants along the streets downtown, you cant go wrong with any of them. I hope you enjoy your visit.

The Ameristar Casino in St. Charles (suburb of St. Louis) just had their grand re-opening & it's really something to see. Lots of restaurants, some shops & nearby Main Street in St. Charles is fun too.

Don't miss the St. Louis Zoo. It is rated as one of the best in the world Within it, Rivers Edge has jst opened and it is supposed to be great.<BR><BR>Don't let rude commentators get you down. They are out there. Their juvenile behavior is just negative attention seeking. The best thing to do is just ignore them, and enjoy the comments of those who want to help you have an enjoyable trip. I live in St. Louis and work downtown not far from where you're staying. For a great Italian restaurant that is moderately priced and is very close to your hotel ( 2 blocks??) try Charlie Gittos. It is very good and usually crowded so go early or later. I also recommend the arch and going underneath to view all of the displays there. That is walking distance from your hotel also. One last option that is very interesting and free is taking a tour of the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Tours are free and take place a times thru the day. It's a fun way to spend an afternoon and you get to sample the beer afterwards. It's not walking distance from your hotel, but, it's not far either (2 miles?). A $5 taxi cab ride will get you there. The Westin is a very nice hotel (it's directly across from the stadium) and I'm sure they can help you with any of the above items I've mentioned.... which are my favorite.

A friend of mine took me to a beautiful Catholic church to look at the architecture. In fact there are a lot of just beautiful old buildings downtown. Also, love to eat at the 94th Aero Squadron out by the airport. Don't know if you still can, but you used to be able to listen to control tower thru earphones while there.

That beautiful Catholic church is the St. Louis Cathedral in the central west end. It has the largest mosaic collection in the world. It rivals anything in Europe - a must see! Nearby are the quiant shops and restaurants of the central west end.<BR>Do you like unusual shopping, origianlitems, upscale? Try the market place in Ladue on Clayton Road, very easy to find.<BR>Rent a car for a day or two.<BR>Zoo is free - one of the best in the world<BR>Art Museum in Forest Park - Free<BR>Clayton has some of the best restaurants in St. Louis, try the Ritz for drinks than head to Shitaake or Cafe Napoli or Cardwells!<BR>Have fun!
