What to do in Philly?
 

Here's the challenge...husband and I are taking a ONE night trip to Philadelphia on Dec. 26. Already have plans for Sunday night and hotel arrangements. Just looking for the best way to fill our time during the morning/afternoon on Sunday. There is so much to see and not enough time. What's the "can't miss" place(s) to go that would be open on a Sunday??? If we decided to hang around a couple of extra hours on Monday morning...any quickie stops we could make on our way out of town?

Would appreciate ideas of where to eat dinner too! Thanks!

I live in Phila so hopefully I can give you some good advice. Check with each one to see if they're open Sunday, I believe several are.

If you're into history...
1) Constitution Center - great, brand new, museum with a fantastic amount of displays and interactive exhibits

2) Liberty Bell & Independence Hall National Park - you learned about this stuff if you payed attention in school

3) Elfreth's Alley - Betsy Ross' house and numerous other colonial era homes.

4) Other - there are a number of other smaller historic sites generally in the neighborhood of where you'll be if you visit the previous 3, Old City/Society Hill

If you're into Art...
1) Philadelphia Museum of Art - World class museum with magnificent architecture

2) Rodin Museum - right near Philadelphia Museum of Art

3) Barnes Museum - one of the finest collections of impressionist art

4) Other - there are numerous other galleries and exhibits you can visit.

If you like quaint spots, go to Suburban Station and take the train to Chestnut Hill and walk Germantown Avenue. It's only about a 20-25 minute train ride. The main drag of Chesnut Hill runs for 15-20 blocks of small shops, galleries and restaurants.

The best restaurants are in Center City. It depends how fine you want to dine. I'll give you some ideas.

Fine Dining - Le Bec Fin, Lacroix, Vetri, Susanna Foo, Django (BYOB)

Moderate - Tangerine, El Vez

Or you could do the Philly shuffle down to South Philadelphia and do a Philly Cheesesteak

Hello...if you do a search on Philly, you will find a lot of "must see" places. It also depends on your interests -- most must see stuff is historical (ie. Liberty Bell).

For dinner -- it depends on your tastes. I love, love, love, Buddakan. There are a lot of great Italian places in South Phila too.

The Reading Terminal Market is closed on Sundays -- so you should defintely get a Philly Cheesesteak at Pat's or Gino's (on Passyunk in South Philly).

Drive on over to Heinz field and watch the Steelers beat the Ravens on the 26th.

My choices for places to see in Philly:

1) Independence Hall. Must see for all U.S. citizens; even those NOT interested in history. We're talking about the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
2) Constitution Center
3) Art Museum

You could see all three in one day, but it would be a rushed day. I would more recommend you stay in the historic district, and see the following:
Franklin Court
Christ Church (remember this is still an active church, so check their worship schedule)
Christ Church Cemetery
Liberty Museum

The Barnes Foundation requests that reservations for visits be made "thirty to forty-five days" in advance. You'll have trouble getting to Heinz Field in PITTSBURG if you're staying in PHILADELPHIA. Le Bec Fin is Philly's five-star restaurant, but it's closed on Sunday.

For that couple extra hours on Monday, walk through the Reading Terminal Market as soon as it opens at 8 am.

Just a note to TripleSecDelay...I'm in Baltimore...was @ Ravens Stadium yesterday for the debacle...ahem I mean game against the Bengals and well...I think I'll stay clear of Heinz Field!!! :o) Guessing you're a Steelers fan- Congrats on the awesome season!
