Well, I guess the short answer is that it all depends. What do you like to do?

Basically, P.S. is a resort area. people come there to relax and unwind, without feeling that they "have to go somewhere to see something." But, I can mention a couple of things to get the ball rolling.

If you like shopping, definitely hit the Desert Hills outlets in Cabazon, about 30 mins. west of P.S. on the 10 freeway. It's simply one of the best outlet malls in the country.

There's the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which will take you to the top of the mountains.

There are a couple of nice oases (one being inside P.S.) where you can hike.

But, if you ask me, I just like going to relax and sit by the pool with a couple of drinks!

I highly reccomend the Aerial Tramway- the hiking at the top is amazing. Also, Joshua Tree National PArk is most definitley worth a trip!

Specifically in Palm Desert, the Living Desert (which is a zoo/botanic garden dedicated to desert plants and animals, and includes a Bighorn reserve and hiking trails).

And El Paseo for (window) shopping & dining (I like Pacifica in the Desert).

For real shopping, I agree about Cabazon. Or the weekend market at the College of the Desert.

If you like casinos, there are now several, the closest is in Rancho Mirage on Bob Hope.

Re. casinos, Spa Casino is in downtown Palm Springs. And there's one by the Cabazon Outlets. Maybe it's called Morongo, I'm not sure though. Also, Hadley Fruit Orchards is by the outlets with their date shakes.

My favorite thing in that area is Joshua Tree National Park. It's pretty amazing! I think it's about 30 miles from Palm Springs, but if you want to spend a day out of town exploring, I would definitely recommend Joshua Tree.

Ditto what Kerry said. Joshua Tree is unlike anything I have seen before. Also enjoyed the tramway.

There's some great hiking in the canyon area near where the tram is. The suggestions for Joshua Tree Nat'l Monument Park are excellent -- I highly recommend going there.

A number of the local casinos offer concerts and shows, so you might want to check ahead for available tickets. There are also professional golf and tennis tournaments throughout the "season", so that might be another option depending on when your visit is planned.

A number of the restaurants also offer live music on various nights if that would be of interest.

We just finished a 7 day vacation in the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area.

We planned out some things to do (we interviewed several friends that go there regularly), and we left some "unstructured" time for us to explore and do whatever seemed good at the moment.

As far as what we planned to do - we visited the Living Desert. That was very unique and a lot of fun! Bring water and wear a hat. More on the Living Desert here:

Another thing we planned to do was eat at a place called the Yardhouse. We were told they had great food and they are known for serving beer in "yard" tall glasses. We had a dinner there and enjoyed it. More on the Yardhouse experience:

We also spent a day at Cabazon, shopping. That was fun and I got some great deals. It is around a 30-40 minute drive though.

Don't know if you geocache, but, we had our laptop with us so we looked some up and spent an afternoon geocaching. I highly recommend it.

Before going to Cabazon, check out about the fires. I live at the beach and it's haziy with light smoke down here. I live two hours from Palm Springs, 1 1/2 hours from Cabazon. That is if you are going this weekend. Just check it out. When are you going?

Check out the Thousand Oaks nature area just outside Palm Desert for interesting hikes and a close up look at an active sand dune. I also like the drive for a few miles on 74 which will give you a greatview of the valley quickly.

I'm sure the last poster meant Thousand Palms, though. Not too many oak trees out that way.
