What to do in NYC on Monday night

I'm taking my daughters (ages 13 and 16) to New York for shopping and shows. We were originally going to leave New York on a Monday (July 6), but we had to change the dates and now we need to find a show to see. I've heard that Broadway is dark on Monday nights but off Broadway shows are available. Anything good? Seems like everything I look up is closing in May.

I'd suggest MMe Tussauds Wax museum if they haven't been or going to Dizzie's Jazz Club. Monday night is upstarts night and the performers are often students or just wandering around an area where shopping goes later.

What about a night tour?

Chicago, Rock of Ages and Phantom of the Opera have Monday night performances.

There are also readings, art openings, indie movies, poetry and comedy slams. Purchase a Time Out NY or get a Village Voice on a street newspaper box to find out all that happens on Monday night, There is a whole world of events.

Altar Boyz off Broadway has been popular with teens. http://www.altarboyz.com/buy-tickets.html You should be able to find a discount from a link on broadwaybox.com (but might have to wait for a code good for July). Monday Night Magic is another idea.

Thanks, everyone. Sadly, Chicago does not run on Mondays - the girls would love to see that. Yes for Phantom, Rock of Ages and Altar Boyz. Hmmm...I'd love to see Phantom - afraid the 13 year old might be bored. I read that Rock of Ages isn't really appropriate for those under 17, mostly because the crowd gets drunk. Altar Boyz...is that really any good? Other possibilities are the Fantastiks, or The American Ballet Theatre doing Romeo and Juliet.

Altar Boyz is fun and I think the girls would like that better than Phantom. I would definitely pick that over the Fantastiks!

Actually, there may shows that don't normally have a Mon. performance that will do one on that Mon. b/c of the holiday weekend. I just noticed 9 to 5 (which I saw last week and thought was good fun) is having both a matinee and an evening performance on July 6th. It hasn't opened yet and reviewers could skewer it, but it's a possibility.

missypie Apr 29th, 2009 09:08 AM

Ticketmaster shows no 9 to 5 on the 6th. Actually, there are fewer shows that weekend - for example no 9 to 5 on the 4th; no In the Heights on the 4th.

I've heard that 9 to 5 is forgettable and kind of harsh.

I think that Tony nominations come out early next week, so I need to decide on any hot shows that might get nominations before then.

Altar Boyz is good, and I think your kids would like it.

missypie is right. I don't know what I was looking at, but no for July 6th. I agree Altar Boyz is a good option.

Last night, each girl independently of the other said, "Phantom." Of course, they also each said "South Pacific" when I wanted West Side Story. They don't like West Side Story because of the ending.

Just saw that all three boys were jointly nominated for a Tony for Billy Elliot - that makes me happy.

Skiergirl May 5th, 2009 03:44 PM

Wait, they serve drinks during Rock of Ages? Now I'm definitely going to get tickets! I can't believe Constantine from AI got nominated for a Tony-is he really that good?

missypie May 6th, 2009 05:34 AM

I've read that they keep the bar open during the show and that there are people constantly coming and going during the show, with the result being that quite a few audience members get drunk.

would 'Time out' be a good choice to find out about Comedy shows in NY?

Cringo May 7th, 2009 05:26 AM

Would you consider the Blue Man Group (haven't seen)? Think they are performing Monday, July 6. The girls might like the area -- The Village -- lots of shops, restaurants, NYU college, Cooper Union, etc.

missypie May 7th, 2009 05:41 AM

I actually love that they chose Phantom. We leave the next day and Phantom is super close to our hotel...so if we need to be packing or whatever, we can just bop over there.

REPORT:

I just wanted to report that was saw Phantom. We all really enjoyed it. The 13 year old said it was possibly her favorite of the six musicals we saw!
