What to do in Miami if it's raining?

DH and I will be in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area for 5 days in late August/early September. If we're unlucky and it's raining and we can't go to the beach, what are some recommended sites?

Hurricanes (don't even think of it) aside we seldom have weather systems come thru that time of year. You just have to manage the time of day.

Usually, the days start off sunny so get in you beach stuff then. By later in the morning and early afternoon you can have clouds rolling in and heavy rain or thunderstorms.

Then by mid-afternoon it will clear. If it's early enough you can get back to the beach. Then you should have warm, very nice evenings.

That's what should happen. Always? No.

We never go to the beach in Miami, and yet we always find something to do there. In any event, you will be there at the driest time of the year and have little chance of getting rained off the beach.

Vizcaya, Little Havana, Spanish Monastery Cloisters, and the Biltmore Hotel Tour are a few of your many, many indoor options: http://www.frommers.com/destinations...7_indattr.html

Enjoy.

As Myer says, rain generally comes and goes very quickly.

Adding a few more to htty's list: the Wolfsonian museum in South Beach and the Deering Estate south of Vizcaya.

I beg to differ with HTTY about the driest time of year. The rainiest month in Miami are June and September.

But like I wrote. Most days will start off with blue skies and the clouds form later in the morning and are usually gone by mid/later afternoon.

Just plan accordingly.

Thanks, Meyer, for correcting my goof. Average rainfall is over 5 inches in August and over 6 inches in September.

Fortunately, there is much to do indoors in Miami. On my last visit I was impressed by the improvements made at Vizcaya since I first saw it 40 years ago and I enjoyed the surprising house tour at Barnacle Historic State Park in Coconut Grove: http://www.floridastateparks.org/thebarnacle/

Thanks so much to Myer, HTTY and 321go. These places sound great even if it's not raining. More to do than time to do it in. :(

Interesting. I live here in South Florida and have never been to any of the places suggested.

Maybe when we retire.
