What to do in Maine for a week.
 

We decided on Maine and purchased airline tickets from Detroit to Bangor, Sept 27-Oct 4. We will rent a car.What should we absolutely see..and do you think we could wing it on motels or have absolute reservations for every night? We don't need much..just a place to sleep after sightseeing.

You might check Yankee Magazine's website for a schedule of events in Maine. We like the Cole Transportation Museum in Bangor. If you like diner food, head to Dysart's. It's a big truck stop. Leonard's Mills is a small logging museum outside of Bangor. You are also close to the Acadia National Park area. A drive over to Camden and up the coast to Acadia would be nice. You can probably wing it at motels but not in the Camden area which is a very popular tourist area. Basically we go in search of the best lobster roll. You are just at the beginning of foliage season but I don't think mid-coast Maine is as popular as NH and VT for leaf peepers. I would say the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland is a must but my husband would say Owls Head Transportation Museum.

I live in the Bangor area. My opinion (since I don't actually have the opportunity to have to stay in motels here) is that you probably should have reservations if you expect any quality at all. What is the sightseeing outline for your trip? It will be the end of the leaf-peeping season but with the price of gas you may not have the normal competition for rooms. You will also be out of here before the long weekend when there will be more tourists.

I wouldn't risk coming without reservations. Yankee's website also has a B&B/Inn Finder. While VT and NH are indeed the bigger foliage spots, Maine is quite lovely in the fall too.

Stay in Bar Harbor. THe only National park in New England :Acadia is close by. You can go whale watching. Paul
