What to do in Key West on a cruise ship stopover

We will be taking our first cruise next month. The ship leaves from Miami and arrives in Key West on the next morning. We have about 6 hours in Key West. Can anyone tell us, first of all, is the port where all the cruise ships dock within walking distance of town or beaches? Also, can anyone recommend tours or things to do in our short time in Key West. My husband and I will be travelling with our two teenage daughters. Thanks!

I was on a cruise that stopped in Key West for half a day. The port was within walking distance of the town, but I am not sure about the beaches. While there I took a trolley tour around the town. I am sure the cruise line has suggested shore excursions for the day.

You can take a glass bottom boat tour to the coral reef. That takes about two hours. There were many cruise ship passengers on the boat when I took this trip with my daughter in December. Quite a few people did become queasy during the trip, so not advised if anyone is prone to seasickness. http://www.furycat.com/key-west/glass-bottom-boats.htm

There is an eco-discovery center near the Fort Zachary Taylor state park, which has interesting ecological exhibits and is free. On land that used to be part of the military base. http://floridakeys.noaa.gov/eco_discovery.html

Fort Zachary Taylor is worth a visit. An old fort with civil war era canons. Also a very nice looking beach. http://www.floridastateparks.org/forttaylor/

You can tour Ernest Hemingway's house. http://www.hemingwayhome.com/

my recollection is that we took the trolly tour, went to a Shipwreck Museum, and to Harry Truman's Little White House.

everything is within walking distance. "Downtown" is 2 blocks from the pier
We did the following and loved it. Thrill boat ride, very exciting and one of the better cruise ship excursions we have done. It's also very safe

The girls would probably like Kinos, http://www.kinosandalfactory.com/
We've done an enjoyable glass bottom boat tour there also.
