What to do in Houston?

My husband is going to Houston, Texas on a business trip.
I am thinking about going along, is there much to see and do there?
His business will take a day, if I go we will stay a couple more.

Thanks,

What? No Enron jokes? I'm shocked.
Ruth-
While a horrible place to live (climate, pollution, traffic, etc.)Houston is fun to visit. The museum area is great, lots of cool places relatively near to each other. Museum of Fine arts has a new wing and is well worth a visit. Across the street is the Contemporary Art Museum, nearby is the Holocaust Museum. Also check out the Menil collection, the Byzantine Chapel, Chapel of St. Basil.
If you like food, Houston restaurants will delight you with everything from high end white tablecloth classics(Cafe Annie, Tony's) to fun and trendy. Fogo de Chao, an Argentinian steak house is terrific. Eatzi's is the prototypical gourmet-to-go place, great to pick up a picnic lunch. The Pappas family runs severl very popular retaurants- Pappasito's (Tex Mex), Pappdeaux (Cajun/Seafood), Pappamia (Italian). Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, Turkish, Ethiopian - it's all available usually at moderate to downright cheap prices.
If you are into shopping, The Galleria is retail central. River Oaks is also cool, though many of the stores are the chain type (Restoration Hardware, Gap, etc.)
If you are into it, NASA Space Center is cool and a short drive away.
For some more info, check out http://www.downtowndistrict.org/linkspage.html

I agree with the above poster. If you'll be there in March, the gardens at Bayou Bend are lovely - azaleas, tulips, wood ferns, etc.

If the trip is between May and September, you might not want to come along.

Galveston is a short (45 min.) drive from Houston. It's a neat beach town with a lot of great old architecture. At one time it was a rich port town similar to New Orleans. Some of the old homes can be toured.

The Moody Botanical Garden is also worth seeing. It is a glass pyramid set on the gulf.

I would recommend driving down to have dinner with your husband at Guido's. It's a very nice (white tablecloth) seafood restaurant and is also set on the gulf shore.

Southwest & Continental have over 30 flights to New Orleans a day from Houston !! New Orleans has no business travel coming there. Wonder why theres so many flights ???

Thanks to all who replied.
I think I will go along and check it out.
There seems to be more there then I had thought.
We will be going in April.

Thanks everyone.

Houston is actually a wonderful place to live. At least there's a few million Houstonians who think so.

I think the Galveston restaurant Connie meant to refer to is Gaido's. It is located on the Seawall and she is right that it is a good choice. If you choose to visit Galveston don't miss walking around The Strand area. The Kemah Boardwalk near NASA is also a delightful destination for a lunch or dinner.

Sorry I'm bringing up these old posts but its been recommended over and over that we should go to searchs before posting the same question over and over again. Now I have questions about things previously commented on like - why not May for Houston? That's when I'm scheduled to go.

bettyk Apr 14th, 2002 01:53 PM

The weather in May can be rather hot and humid. That said, it can also be mild and dry. Just bring appropriate clothing for warm weather. We make up for it with our good food and friendly people!

I'm coming from Miami, it cannot be more humid than here. As long as everything is air conditioned I'm ok. Everyplace does have AC?

houstonian Apr 14th, 2002 03:33 PM

Too much AC in my opinion. Sometimes you need a sweater in some restaurants. One of the things we like when we go to Mexico is that many restaurants are not over airconditioned.

Try not to breathe too much on your trip if you can help it--it's a real cesspool in Houston...

www.ghasp.org

I see the persistent troll has emerged from the Bayou goo.........Stick to the topic.

I'm used to taking a sweater everywhere in Miami too. Between home - car - buildings, it's very hot but once inside it's usually cold.
