What to do in Dallas?

What are the must-see's in Dallas? I will be visiting for several weeks on a business trip. Thanks in advance.

I just spent a week in Dallas for technical training and with the exception of the Dealey Plaza JFK Memorial and the museum at the Book Depository, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of tourist attractions. The Dallas Observer, a weekly A&E paper, ran their annual "best of Dallas" issue when I was there, and recommended Austin TX as the best place to take your visiting friends when you wished to show them around! It helps to have a car when you're there (we did not). Austin is an hour or two away but highly recommended. The "funky/artsy" area is called Deep Ellumand we had great lattes at the Cafe Brazil coffeehouse and also an outstanding contemporary Mexican meal at Acca Y Alla. It was moderately priced, hip and the service was terrific. It is VERY noisy and crowded - consider sitting out on the patio if it's warm enough. The "West End" has the predictable mix of tourist traps and I found it to be a waste of time. There is a great selection of restaurants in "restaurant row", just off the highway near Irving (out by TX Stadium) and I suggest Pappa Deaux Cajun Seafood Grill for a great meal (we went with a party of 5 and everyone loved it). Ther's also a good selection of restaurants on lower Greenville Road/Ave but the local light rail doesn't have a stop on that part of Greenville - again you must have a car. Last note - if by chance you stay in Adam's Mark Hotel, ensure to stay in the main tower (NOT the North tower) and ask for a room on the side of the hotel facing away from the highway overheads - the noise was horrendous when we stayed there.

The tour of the "book depository" (dowtown Dallas) and all of the JFK stuff is very interesting, and well worth an hour or two. A piece of history you don't normally see.. Also so many great restaurants. Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. West End market place is a lot of fun if you like bars. Deep Elummd is fun also, very trendy.. There is a great restaurant called Sambuca in Addison. Enjoy your stay.
Absolute must do: get a Friday edition of the Dallas Morning News and pull out the Guide section. It lists all of the events that are goingon for the following week, plus has good restaurant listings. I'm a local, and I live by the Guide! :-)

Owen's problem in Dallas was that he did not have a car and he was staying downtown, which severely limited his ability to go exploring, since there's not much downtown. Hopefully you will have a car! (And FYI- Austin is THREE hours south of Dallas!)

Some fun things to see in the area: Galleria and North Park malls when they are decorated for Christmas; The Dallas Museum of Art; take tours of the Ballpark at Arlington, Studios of Las Colinas and Texas Stadium; the Dallas and Fort Worth Zoos (Fort Worth has a new baby elephant!!); Fort Worth Stockyards and Billy Bob's Texas Honky Tonk; Fort Worth Kimball Art Museum; Fort Worth's Sundance Square.

Just ask if you need more to do!

Ditto on Galleria, art museum, try and take tour of new symphony hall designed by I.M. Pei. On way to Galleria, great moderately-priced restaurant is Sevy's on Preston, just north of Highland Park. Perfect service, quietly elegant arts and crafts-style deco and wonderful food. You even get to see Sevy. Nice little shopping centers all along Preston.

First, Austin is more like 3 hours away.
The Dallas Morning News guide to things to see and do is at www.guidelife.com
Fair Park is the best collection of art deco architecture around. It has several museums and a nice IMAX theater. A lot depends on whether you have transportation. Dallas has a light rail system but is new & goes only to zoo and North Park Mall. If you are staying downtown, take the trolley to McKinney Ave. for good eating places. The West End is touristy but fun. Deep Ellum is funky fun and lower Greenville has some fun places. Downtown the Majestic has theater productions; the Meyerson Symphony Hall is great; the Farmers Market area, Old City Park, etc. are interesting to visit.
