What to do in Austin
I am going to Austin for the weekend of October 11-12. I have been a few times before, and am not looking to do anything related to government or history. I know Saturday night we are planning on going to Sixth Street and maybe Lake Travis during the day. We are staying at the Omni Downtown.
What are good places on Sixth Street for a laid back couple in their late twenties? What fun things to do in Austin am I missing? Thank you for any suggestions and have a great day :) |
Be sure to go to the OASIS overlooking the lake. Awesome views and a fun party atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit. |
I've only been to Austin once but I loved it. As a late 40's guy who thinks younger and appreciates eclectic scenes, good music and ethnic eats, I found plenty to enjoy in Austin. Most of the Sixth Street scene seemed to be on drunken partying, much of it by folks who appeared to be barely of age or more likely, out imbibing on their fake ID's. It's a fun stroll anyway and there's some incredible local musical talent. Antone's is a bare-bones sort of place but often has great music. There are also a few clubs and some restaurants out past the end of the Sixth Street district in a warehouse area - worth checking out - it draws a slightly older and mellower crowd.

Laid back and 6th Street...Not generally used in the same sentence! But if you have been before, you know what 6th street is alll about. It shouldn't be too bad, since that is the Texas/OU game in Dallas, so maybe 30+K students might be away.
I second the idea of Antones. How about the Continental Club on S. Congress? I'd check out a few websites to see who's playing where: www.auschron.com www.austin360.com Oasis is fun too, but a bit of a drive. Not sure if you will have a car. The Omni is a great location for visiting 6th Street! Also might want to check out W. 4th, the warehouse district. (Near Antones). Check out Fado Irish pub. If you happen to be in town on Friday the 10th, I highly recommend Jr. Brown at the Continental Club. GREAT show. |
Thanks so far for the replies. I will have a car since I am coming from Houston. The times I have been to 6th street before I was younger and wilder, and did not pay attention if there were any calmer places in the area.
I think we will definitely check out the Warehouse district and Antone's. Is there anything during the day we should check out? |
Daytime, Oct in Austin...You want shopping? Scenery? Hiking?
Daytime - I'd say have b'fast at Gueros on S. Congress. Sit outside (limited seating) if you can. Take your time, read the paper, people watch. Stroll up/down Congress Ave a bit for a block or two. Very eclectic people and neighborhood. Perhaps then drive out towards Lake Austin. Check out the scenery. Have lunch at one of the places on the lake - The Oasis, or Johnny Finns (literally their deck is ON the water). Not the greatest food, but heck, watch THE Game on their TV outside at the bar and eat/drink if that's your thing. The weather should be ideal. (Fingers crossed for you!) Hmm. Sounds good. I may just have to go there too... Or, (or the next day) go to Zilker park, bring a frisbee, walk around, check out Barton Springs. Take a walk to Chuys or Shady Grove for late lunch. Sit outside at Shady Grove. Just depends if you want to chill or see the sights. My suggestions let you do both. Oh, as for JR. Brown at the Continental - His first show the night before is already sold out, so you might want to try Plan B... |
Guess my edits didn't make it. I want to add that you may want to stop at the Oasis (Lake Travis)later in the day and watch the sunset then stay for the band outside on the patio. http://www.oasis-austin.com/ Looks like Hot Wax is there on the 11th. FUN dance band!

I'm smiling over these comments on age as it relates to 6th St. :) Our daughter went to UT for 2 years before transferring to A&M, transferring only because their program for her major was better. Her heart remained in Austin, but...she met and married her husband at A&M. They live out of state now but went back to Austin for Labor Day Weekend, of course heading back to 6th St, and her comment was that the kids seemed so young and so drunk. She's 32 and although she still enjoyed it for old times sake, evidently it no longer seemed quite as terrific as it once had. I wonder how others see it on returning after a decade away?
All ages enjoy the sun setting at the Oasis...I agree it's worth the drive out and it's a pretty drive to boot. We also used to enjoy hiking around Hamilton Pool. It's beautiful there. Texas-OU Weekend--it'll be a wild night in Dallas! Maybe you should head on up 35 a bit further!! |
Olive - I used to LIVE on 6th (figuratively of course) about 20 years ago, soon after moving here. Now, I don't care for it AT all. Might take a walk up and down once, stop at Pete's Piano Bar (early) but no thanks!

We are definitely going to the Oasis at sunset and plan to check out the band. Everyone I have asked about Austin has mentioned the Oasis so we have to go.
I think for Saturday night we will mainly hit some spots on 4th street and maybe walk down to 6th and people watch. Thanks again for all the advice. |
You might want to Start on 4th and end on 6th. Then you can just walk a block or so to your hotel!
Have a great time. The weather here right now is Austin at it's best. low 80's during the day, upper 50's at night. ahhhhhhhhhh. |
