What to do around Norfolk . . .
 

We are going to visit our daughter in Norfolk. What recommendations for area, whether day trips or up to two day trips?

You have choices galore, and it depends on your interests. First, there's a beautiful beach out there at Virginia Beach. For a two day trip, a drive down the Outer Banks of North Carolina is lovely. Ocracoke might be too far to go in two days, but it's great. <BR><BR>Back to Norfolk, there's the Cousteau Ocean Center (not sure what its called exactly). If you're visiting real soon, the Azalea Gdns in Norfolk are wonderful. Guys like visiting the Naval bases and visiting the ships. Don't know how open it is since Sept 11....<BR><BR>Nearby is major US history: Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg. Williamsburg is great, and so is Jamestown. You could easily spend two days between Williamsburg and Jamestown. And, if any younger kids, Busch Gardens.<BR><BR>Hope you get lots of good ideas. We lived there several years ago and go back to visit occasionally.<BR>

I asked the same question last year and got a lot of good responses from this board so you can always do a search. I'll tell you the highlights of my too short weekend there: visiting the USS Wisconsin (I think that's the one right in Norfolk), the Chrysler museum is great. Not cars, but a small private art collection that's beautifully displayed.

I'm not a shopper but the mall there is lovely, and there's antique shopping across the water in Portsmouth...Had a great meal at Magnolia Steakhouse. Also drove to Virginia Beach (only 1/2 hour away) to get my beach fix. Hope this helps.

Just returned from there. Nauticus is the name of the maritime museum that includes the battleship USS Wisconsin. The downtown area has gotten quite nice but the Waterside complex which was so nice 1o years ago is a must miss now! MacArthur Mall just a few blocks from there is very nice, with an excellent restaurant named Kincaid's. We had FRESH Alaskan halibut there that was as good as it was in Alaska! The base is closed to the public due to security concerns and there is no general public ship visiting.
