Love Daphine Orleans...but Hotel Provincial is nice too.

Hotel Monteleone has a deal on LuxuryLink at the moment...

It's a little pricey, but considering it includes taxes, continental breakfast and a few other perks, it's a great deal. I prefer smaller hotels though.

The plantations are great but they will take too much of your limited time. I agree that you should skip the river boat and do the ferry. Mardis Gras World is fun and something you won't find anywhere else...they will pick you up free from the Algiers ferry stop. A cemetary tour would be great fun and the one we did included a visit to a voodoo house. The WWII museum is a must do if you're into that. If you like antiques, walk down Royal St. and definitely walk around Jackson Square to see all the street performers and artists. St. Louis Cathedral is beautiful and also right on the square.

With 2.5 days in New Orleans you have just enough time to eat and drink your way to oblivion. Tour? I wouldn't bother. I'd get myself a room at the Monteleone, a bar stool anywhere, take a walk from your hotel to get a beignet or two or three, get lunch and dinner reservations sorted, tickets for Preservation Hall purchased and transport to Frenchmen St. at night.

That's it. Order a Sazerac and a Lemon Drop, a Hurricane (because you must) and relax. New Orleans is all about the air you breathe.

I see that you're not into bars! That's ok, have a lemonade instead of a Sazerac, et al. But don't scurry around in the heat of April in New Orleans. You will soon realize you don't have to chase New Orleans down. The Quarter and the Garden District kind of open up to the visitor. Enjoy the atmosphere!

Don't go on a bunch of tours out of the city. There's too much to do in the city and you don't have enough time. Go on the national park service's tours of the French Quarter and the Garden District. Ride the streetcar all the way Uptown and stop and eat the Camellia Grill. Take a walk around Audubon Park. Eat some good food. Go see Jeremy Davenport at the Ritz-Carlton for some music. If you like art, there are excellent exhibits at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Contemporary Arts Center. The World War II Museum should NOT be missed. That's a start. Have fun.

I hope you like it...we sure did. Bayona across the street is definitely worth a try for either lunch or dinner.
