What sort of car to drive from Yosemite to Beatty ?

Hi, this may seem like a daft question but we are planning to drive from SFo for one night in Yosemite then on to Vegas via Beatty near death valley ,the route looks very difficult, would we be able to drive it in an ordinary saloon car or do we need a 4x4 wheel drive ?What is the road like ? in uk where we live this sort of road can ne quite dangerous !

You won't need a special car or 4WD. But If you mean heading straight across to Tonopah and down 95, that is one looooong (and after leaving CA, pretty boring/ugly) drive. It will take at least 8 hours plus stops -- so about a 10 hour drive.

Heading down 395 and across Death Valley is a tad bit longer, but at least it is a scenic --gorgeous in fact.

Either route will be a loooooong slog if you try it in one go. Since it appears you've dropped Sacramento and Reno from your plans, why not slow down a bit and stopover along the way. If you stayed in say Lone Pine -- you wouldn't have to leave Yosemite at some God Awful early hour, and you could cross Death Valley in the morning before it reaches 110+ (45C) degrees.

Roxanne - It sounds like you are taking CA 168/NV 266 from Big Pine? This is a fine route - much higher than Death Valley - and the best route for Yosemite to Vegas. These are remote roads but fully paved and in great shape. So a rented "saloon" car will be fine. It's about an 8 hour drive from Yosemite Valley.

Just so you realize that >>8 hour drive from Yosemite Valleyany stops, photo ops, meals, just leg stretching - you will be on the road at least 10 hours. (sort of like diving from London to Inverness in one go -- only MUCH hotter/drier)

That is why I'd break the journey . . .

In the States a Saloon is called a sedan.

Are you very sure you want to stay in Beatty? The scenery is much nicer over on the 395 side IMO
