I've done this before and definitely recommend you follow CindyW and lcuy's suggestions, including the Byodo-In (one of my favorite places on Oahu). If you really only have one day, go for it - It will just be a long adventure-filled day...But I wish we had slowed down and spent two or more days doing this so that we didn't feel we were trying so much to stay on schedule....left us feeling like we couldn't just stop and explore as much as we would have liked. I'll be back to Oahu, though, so I can take it slower another time.

tune in to www.honolulu.metromix.com on Tuesday, 7/14, when my gallery on Oahu shave ice comes out. Some people think it's all the same ice and all the same flavors, but for those of us who grew up here...there's a big difference. I found the fluffiest shave ice in a hole-in-the-wall near the Baskin Robbins that President Obama worked at when he was in high school.

So where is it Melissa?? I even went to Jung's yesterday, so I could see if I agreed with you!

(and yes, it was soft & fluffy! I got Melona & Strawberry colada flavors, with ice cream and cond milk on top. Super Yummmm!

Melissa, we stopped at the General Store in Haliewa for shave ice because we saw somewhere that it was voted No. 1 by locals. We really liked it but have not tried the more "famous" ones. Do you know about it? (Just for future reference, of course.)

Sorry sorry! It got postponed by my editor. Here is my shave ice gallery:

Carolyn, IMHO Matsumoto Shave Ice is NOT the best, but they have the best PR. (As a PR person, I can appreciate that.) But if you go to the North Shore, just go to Aoki's, which is just before Matsumoto. Better shave ice and shorter line.

My favorite shave ice on Oahu:
Best ice - Jung's
Best flavors - Shimazu store

You don't have to drive all the way to the North Shore just to get shave ice!

Actually, we rented the car for our usual around-the-island drive, stopping at the Blow Hole, Kailua Beach, and other favorite places; but my daughter told everyone we rented it specifically to go get shave ice. I just wondered about the General Store's claim to fame.

Oooohh I see. The place you mention is actually named "The General Store?" I haven't heard of that one. Normally shave ice places have a last name attached to it.

Melissa, it is a big store selling all kinds of souvenirs, food products, and other stuff, with a pretty large shave ice counter in the front. If it has another name, I don't know what it is.
