What's your favorite island in the Caribbean and why?
Planning a honeymoon soon. Deciding where to go in the Caribbean. We want tropical beauty, clear water, and lots to do without too much overcrowding. Also want a clean place. Any suggestions. We could go to several islands too. So far, I think we're leaning towards St. Johns.

I say St John, hands down (and I've been to Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Aruba). The beaches are beautiful, it is very "un-crowded", you can rent a great private villa (w/pool and amazing view) for a good price, and there are some top notch restaurants as well. We loved hiking (about 2/3 of the island is National Park) to remote beaches. We brought a picnic lunch to one and had the entire beach to ourself all day. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed St John. We are saving our frequent flyer miles to go back in a couple of years when our children are old enough to enjoy it with us.

I assume you mean St. John, USVI as opposed to St. Johns, Antigua. I agree with snowrooster about St. John, but whether or not you're happy there dependes on your definition of "lots to do." If by that you mean shopping, casinos, nightlife, etc. then St. John is not a good pick. If, on the other hand, you would be content with snorkeling, hiking, daysails, etc., then St. John could be perfect for you. For more detailed information, I'd suggest you do a search over on the Caribbean board, where this question is asked frequently.

From St John, a day trip to St Thomas is simple. A day trip to Tortola is also possible. After hiking and snorkeling all day, a quiet evening to read and relax was enough for us. We haven't been in more than a few years but I expect Hamilton is still giving island tours and the National Park Service is still doing great programs. And you definitely want to pack picnic lunches and enjoy some out of the way places.

You might want to use the Forum link above and check out the Caribbean Forum. There's plenty of information there. If you use the search feature you'll find that there was a thread on this very topic just a couple of weeks ago. Good Luck finding your island.

I agree with other posters about St.John. There, Caneel Bay has only 171 rooms scattered around 170 acres and 7 tree-shades white sand beaches with wade-in snorkeling. It is in the National Park, with no development to be seen anywhere.
If you have never been to the Caribbean, a great introduction is Barbados. It has at least some of everything the islands offer, except for gambling and a volcano. Lovely people, plenty of sightseeing and nightlife, wide range of hotels beaches, restaurants. Check out Coral Reef Club on the calm west coast. Family owned for some 50 years, classy, beautiful grounds and suites. Wade-in snorkeling. See www.barbados.org and www.coralreefbarbados.com

The Abaco Islands in the Bahamas are my favorite but for a honeymoon, hands down Anguilla.
Check out CuisineArt or Cap Julaca. Big $$$ but worth it.
Also high on a honeymooners list should be Las Ventanas al Paraiso Hotel, San Jose Del Cabo Mexico. Also very expensive but worth the bucks.

St Thomas has more to do. We stayed at a place called Pavillions and Pools. Was a guest house type place that was converted to condo's. Each bungalow had its own pool, open air shower, view of beach. Very nice.
