San Francisco, NYC and Portand are faves. Least would be maybe Houston and Phoenix.
Fdecarlo, when were you last in San Jose? I live in SJ, and wonder about the unhappy people comment. Culture wise, it's not San Francisco, but there's a decent amount of music, theatre and museums these days.

Favorite: New York
Least favorite: Las Vegas
I live in San Francisco, so although I love it, a "visit" there isn't top on my list.
Anybody here been to Quebec City? (I know, this isn't the Canada forum). I'm considering a long weekend there--in winter.

I think that what might be very helpful here is to give a little more description about what part of the place that you like. So much of whether you like a place depends on exactly where you went there, the weather at the time and who you shared the time with.

wilwi, thanks for the information. I have recently started a new job so have to do shorter trips until vacation time accrues. I do have a hard time wrapping my brain around what "really cold" means.
irecommend, I like the way your screen name segues into your post so well. To answer:
I love New York any time of year--even August. Proliferation of cultural and intellectual activities and events. History. Restaurants. Museums. Friends who live there. I have been many times and will return again and again.
And don't care for Las Vegas any time of year. Have been 3x, once in summer (too hot!). Although if you drive out of town to the desert, Nevada itself is beautiful.

trippinkpj: I lived in San Jose for several years during the "dot com boom" years, and have returned many times to visit family and friends who still live in the area.
I can't say the city has no nice features, but for the most part I've never seen so many angry people in one place before. Everyone seems a day late, a dollar short and to have something to prove.
I remember a poll taken by the SJ Mercury News in 2001. Over 40% of respondents said they'd leave the area immediately, if they could take their jobs with them. So roughly half the residents really don't want to be there, they stay simply because of their jobs. This is not a good recipe for a happy populace.

Wow. Las Vegas may be the most consistent least fave! Interesting to me, since I live in Vegas. I don't really like it that much here, either. It's definitely more fun to visit than to live here. Although, in defense, it is so centrally located to a lot of cool places.
Anyway, to answer the question:
Favorites: Savannah, New Orleans, Denver, and although I haven't been there yet, I know I will fall in love with Santa Fe and Taos.
Least favorite: (first I'm going to duck) NYC. I know, collective gasp! It's just too much for me.

That's funny, ceb! To me, Las Vegas represents the worst of everything- every vice known to man....smoking, drinking, prostitution, gambling, etc....plus the overindulgent spending and lavish lifestyles of many are always on display. The whole place made me feel dirty. I never want to go back.

LLindaC - I agree with you. From the perspective of living here, most people have moved and are moving here with one motivation: money. I'll admit, it's why I moved here!
When a city is built on those motivations and the vices that go along with it, I don't think it's possible to have much virtue! It's definitely one of those places that doesn't have a good "vibe". Maybe why I'm so attracted to Santa Fe, which does!
Why do I live here? I moved here for the adventure of moving across the country and thought it would make a good story to tell when I'm a great-grandmother. It did. For now, the job keeps me here (there's that evil money thing again!), as does the strong candidate for marriage that I've met - here! We're planning on heading for the hills - literally, to Hill Country - sooner than later!

My least is Philadelphia, now that place gave me the heebeejeebees, really bad vibe.
My favorite at the moment has to be Savannah. I also have a fondness for San Antonio and Cape Cod.
I've only visited these places I've listed once and it's been a very long gap for San An, and Cape Cod.
