What rental co is least expensive?

As you probably already know by all my questions. We are thinking about going to New England in the fall. Flying into Boston and then drive and see as much as possible in nine days. Maine, Cape Cod, CT, Vermont and more. Maybe get a rental car in Boston and keep it for eight days. Do you know of any affordable rental agencies?? We're trying to do this on a budget and it's getting up there. We just need the most basic economy car there is. Help?

Have you done any research at all?

I always us orbitz.com for comparison shopping then book directly through the rental co website.

vrbo.com, weneedavaction.com, and cyberrentals, in that order of most affordable to least (cyberrentals and WNAV represent agencies as well as owners)

Duh, just saw you wanted rental cars not houses. Nevermind.

Enterprise isoften the cheapest. But it varies by area. I don;t think you have any choice but to do all the research - check the major services to see what you can find and then go company site by site to see what you can get. Finally - you might try Priceline if you don;t car about company or exact drop off details.

Great! I got a few good suggestions I will look into. Thanks a lot!

Look on Orbitz or Expedia for a ballpark figure. Then look on Hotwire for what their price will be which will include taxes. Then bid on Priceline with the knowledge of what the added taxes will be.

Added, on AnY given day, AnY car rental agency could be the cheapest. One time it was even AVIS for us.

Don't book the car from the airport. Off airport rentals are much cheaper. Possibly you could take a cab or the subway out to the suburbs and rent there to save quite a bit. The closest cities to the airport are Chelsea, Everett, Malden & Revere.

And maybe not. How can going to a smaller town nearby be "convenient" when you are toting up all the stuff. You also have to return it there and make arrangements to get to the airport IN TIME for your flight. Maybe you can save a bit, but time may be more important. Shopping on various sites and jumping on one when you see it is not all bad. And in this one, renting further out will be better, particularly for fall foliage. It will get more expensive within maybe 2 months of the trip.
