What place in the U.S. is good for a cultural trip?

you get street wise by taking a trip. All the same rules apply that your mother taught you....don't talk to strangers, know where you are a simple look at safe and unsafe neighborhoods in any guide will help you out. For Pete sakes you are in college Wilma don't be frightened just be cautious.

John, for the record it's Social Science Club not Social Studies. Please don't say they are the same thing ok. I have a BA in Social Science not social studies and they are different. Also why are some posters telling Wilma not to be afraid? I don't see anything in her post indicating she was afraid of going anywhere. Reread her post folks she's looking for cultural events going on in the cities she's listed.
BTW John wherever do you get that I'm hostile? Hostility in your post telling me to go elsewhere is very apparent.

Justforthe record. Seems to me that John was only trying to help you here. You have a B.A in Social Science and you have to ask this question ???? Ok I will fight with you here if that makes makes you feel better.
I have a BA in Social Science also and surprise surprise, it is the study of society and institutions within. At most schools it encompasses a look at Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science and Social Work. Now having actually completed a degree program do you really think she is talking about going to a circus? arggghhh are you madder than hell:just for the record? If you want to know why people are telling her not to be afraid you should read the thread. Take that and that justfortherecord...have a good day it's all small stuff just for the record, nothing to get your shorts in a knot over....arggghh!!!
Wilma, My vote goes for NYC. Washington is a beautiful city but too sanitized, not real. The middle class community that lives there is very transient and I think this impacts the culture of the city. The city center is completely dead on any given weekend. Georgetown is nice but seems largely like a stretch of shops set up for tourist. In NYC you have Greek, Italian, African American, Asian, Arabic communities that have been there for generations. The metropolitan museum of art is the most important gallery in the western hemosphere. Here you can see rooms from different periods form Europe, Middle East, Asia and beyond. Have fun and I agree don't listen to posts that tell you need street smarts first, you will be fine.
...The memorial site route? Is this what you are looking for in a study of society?

Has anyone considered 2 possibilities:
1. this is a troll post intent on getting everyone all worked up about the alleged cultural inferiorities of the cities she listed(?), or
2. that this is a legitimate question and that because of geographic and/or budgetary limitations, Wilma's group cannot swing a trip to (and pay top dollar for) NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, etc and have decided to limit their trip to one of the cities mentioned?

Think Wilma will tell us what she needs Liam in terms of location and budget. My nephew just took a class trip to Greece, he lives in a two bedroom apartment with his family of 5 and is only 13.... but food for thought about it being a troll. I did NYC on very little money as a student. You can feast on ethnic food (Indian being my suggestion)(inexpensive) and museums are cheap most ask for a suggested donation not a set admission. This means you can contribute $1. to get into the Met. Wilma I would also choose NYC you will have your whole life to see cities closer to home. Having said this just tell us if NYC is too far and out of budget, your trip sounds like a blast….Oh to be taking that first college trip to a city again!!! Have a wonderful time Wilma good Idea to check out city web pages for cultural events.

NYC also is worth considering, but I do have to question Isabelle's assertion that the Met is the finest gallery in the Western Hemisphere. I've been to the Met many times and it certainly is in the very top tier, but I would hardly call it superior to the Louvre or the British Museum.
I also wonder what Wilma means by "springtime". Early March might be springtime in Mississippi, but it could be winter in NYC, Boston or Chicago and a little too nippy for them. Ditto for Philly, although DC would be ok (unless they get one of their spring storms where 3 inches of snow paralyzes the city--what a laugh that must give people in Boston!). If Wilma means April or May, then any of the cities mentioned would be doable.

BTilke, Wilma specified in her second sentence that she's talking about April or May.
Isabelle, as far as studying society, I guess we'll have to wait for Wilma to specify whether she's talking about American society in general or inetrnational/immigrant communities in the US.

If you go looking for culture in St. Louis, Dallas or Atlanta the most you'll find is the tractor pull, monster truck rally or if you're lucky maybe big time WWF rasslin' will be in town.
New York would be the obvious choice, but a good second choice would be Boston, where you can learn alot about the history of the US circa 1776, and if it's "pop culture" you want, you can always go to the Cheers pub.

Joanne: African American, Asian, Arabic, Caribbean and other communities are all part of American society as long as they live here. Still given your very narrow definition of who can be included as part of American society I still do not understand what you are trying to say. Isabelle said these communities have been in NYC for generations. Are they still not part of American society in your eyes?
BTilke: Main Entry: western hemisphere
Function: noun
Usage: often capitalized W&H
Date: 1624
: the half of the earth comprising No. and So. America and surrounding waters

Hi,
For history of the US I would try Boston, Washington DC, or Philadelphia. There are tons of other cities with wonderful history as well. But those places are really the birthplaces of the US. For drama and the arts I would say NY city. For nature lovers I would say coastal New England, Shenendoah Valley, Yosemite National Park and a drive through the Colorado Rockies. Geeze, there are just too many places without knowing more of what you are looking for in your experience here in the US.

Other clues to consider in your suggestions, whethre or not Wilma is a troll:
Wilma may attend Coahoma Community College but did misspell its name. Their website is:
http://www.ccc.cc.ms.us/default.htm
They do have a Social Science Forum listed among student organizations. Also, it's listed as a historically balck college, see http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0872606.html
So, keep this in mind when making suggestions for the "cultural trip".

Please, xxx, don't overreact and put words in my mouth.
I never said that ethnic communities weren't part of American culture; I specifically said "American society IN GENERAL or international/immigrant communities." The very fact that these communities are identifiable and distinctive is what differentiates them from our homogenized Amrerican society in general.
Of course these immigrant communities are part of US culture, though the fact that she'd apparently have to go to NYC to study them indicates that they are indeed out of the mainstream.
Folks, are we are just going to go around in circles and end up arguing semantics until Wilma shows up?

I think Wilma and her club could write a pretty interesting paper on the Social Science of fodorites responses to a rather simple question! Being a Sociology major myself, this makes for some interesting study.
Wilma, you all could save the money you'd spend on the trip and study this message board instead. Or, go on the trip and get extra credit here!

Joanne I think your words slipped out of with your thinking.
"Isabelle, as far as studying society, I guess we'll have to wait for Wilma to specify whether she's talking about American society in general or inetrnational/immigrant communities in the US".
Sounds pretty loaded to me Joanne think before you write. Shall we not respond to Wilma at all with you on guard. And give Wilma some suggestions yourself juvenile criticisms through out the thread are wearing. Now that you have given us all an insight into your intellect I suspect noone will be too offended by your remarks.
Wilma another vote for NYC. I must also say I would go to Honolulu if money and boundaries are not an issue. You can visit the Japanese cultural center, participate in an actual tea ceremony, there are always cultural parades and festivals, china town, not to mention native Hawaiian interests. Go to the Hawaii visitors bureau for calendar events. On the mainland is there and alternative to NYC? I can’t think of one all other cities are towns by comparison. HAVE A GREAT TIME WHERE EVER YOU GO.
