what northern cali cities are most reknowned for surfing culture

what coastal city (or cities) in northern california are most reknowned for surfing culture? for many years i presumed Big Sur to be a somewhat popular destination for surfers, but according to wikipedia, it says much of Big Sur's beaches are privately owned, and makes the town to seem more like a secluded refuge for affluent yuppies with homes perched high on the Santa Lucia mountains.

Where does this term "Cali" come from? I am a California native and never once heard that term until I started reading posts in this forum. Just curious.

Most every beach in California has public access. But there is really no surfing to speak of in Big Sur (for other reasons -- not private ownership)

Santa Cruz. Plus some surfing in places like Capitola, San Francisco, etc.

And of course there is Mavericks -- which is held in Half Moon Bay.

Europeans seem to use Cali, somehow ignoring the town in Colombia that is named Cali (or Santiago de Cali).

Cali just sounds very wrong as an abbreviation for California.

Ah, that explains it. A New Yorker slaughtering geography. I am a native of California or SoCal/NorCal, but not Cali.

"Cali" comes from people who are not familiar with the state.

Thanks for the tips on where this Cali thing comes from. Sounds weird to a California native's ears.

Cali is a term more popular with young people, esp. in hip hop culture. I have heard it used in Cali as well as outside it, by natives and non.
