What kind of coat for NYC in Dec?

Will a leather jacket be warm enough? Do we need hats & gloves? We'll be in the city in early Dec.

xmas week? I know the weather can vary but I suspect I need shoes with thick soles to keep warm walking around and lots of layers? I'm still wearing sandals at home and my closed shoes have thin soles.

Only if the leather jacket has a very warm lining. Otherwise, wool is best. In addition to hat & gloves, don't forget a scarf. It also matters whether you plan to just run in & out of cabs, or if you'll really be out walking a lot.

It could be 20s or it could be 50s, can't predict. Dress warmly if you're planning on walking a lot.

This has been discussed to death.

Wear a wool coat, scarf, hat, and gloves. Yes, wear shoes that don't have thin soles. Wear wool blend socks. Layer your clothing.

If the weather's anything like it is today, wear a long trenchcoat/raincoat with a liner, hat, scarf & gloves, and waterproof boots (there are HUGE puddles on almost every corner that are tough to get around). Good luck!

If weather is normal you can expect daytime temperatures in the upper 30's, lower 40's. Nights will be in the lower 30's and possibly into the higher 20's. A heavy sweater and a leather jacket can do it. I wear a sweater or a sweat shirt under a down jacket.

The first week of December last year no coat at all was required.

A leather jacket probably will work if you're not the type that is always cold. Be sure to bring along silk long underwear to wear under a heavy pair of pants and a sweater. Most important have a big scarf that you can wrap around your neck and a pair of thick socks - I love my wool ones.

Bring a warm coat! And hats & gloves, you never know, the weather is very changeable, but it could be very cold, and I always find it colder in the city because of all the concrete and shade from the tall buildings. The wind just whips down the avenues. I'm saying this because it happens to be cold today, brrrr!

Today you would need something water proof and rubber boots!
I think a warm leather, with lining would be good. Although I would prefer a good wool coat myself, goes day and night and you can add layers if it is cold, just wear something light under if it is warmer.
Hats and gloves are a must, you can always buy them here. Canal St will have some fun Burberry Rain hats, gloves are cheap at the stands in Soho.
Have a great time!

What kind of coat in NYC? A black one.

NYGirl Nov 17th, 2002 03:26 PM

Lol! I would only wear a black wool coat:)

what about wearing sneakers around the city? last week in Dec. Will we, especially my kids, be too cold?

xxx Nov 19th, 2002 06:19 AM

Sneakers may be a little cold. At least have them wear wool or wool blend socks.
