What is your favorite Cuban food?

We will be traveling to the Keys(Marathon) and Miami in a few weeks and are looking for suggestions of local foods. We are from PA Dutch area but enjoy trying regional food. Husband and one daughter enjoy spicy food but the rest of us tend to stay with less spicy foods.

Any recommendations of your favorites? Especially Cuban foods?

Real Cuban Coffee - something I can't find here in Dallas...even in restaurants that claim to be Cuban.

I don't know why, but I always order Paella in Cuban restaurants even though it is more Spanish than Cuban.

I think because it is associated with Latin America or has that Latin feel.

Cuban food isn't spicy like Mexican food. There are lots of great suggestions listed above. The "local foods" for the Florida Keys are the local fishes - yellowtail snapper, grouper and dolphin. Conch (pronounced Konk) chowder is a tomato based chowder that can be spicy. Don't forget the key lime pie. You may decide you need to taste it everywhere you go so you can pick the best in the Keys. Pick up a bottle of Nellie's Key Lime juice so you can make a pie for your friends when you get home!

Ahhh, Cuban food! My list:

-- Arroz con pollo
-- Medianoche
-- Plátanos fritos
-- Lomo salteado
-- Fricasé de pollo
-- Moros

Full of flavor, but NOT spicy. Love Cuban food!

Black Bean Soup with rice and raw onions and fresh bread. Ironically, we're having it tonight.

cubano sandwich ... but it must be on real Cuban bread ...

If you visit Key West, find Jose's Cantina, an extremely low-key, family-owned restaurant on White Street. I've only been to Jose's for lunch, and the cubanos are extraordinary!

I love camarones al ajillo too. An even heartier meal would be pollo asado al ajillo, moros y plátanos. Anyone who's familiar with the West LA Versailles (on Venice)-- completely unrelated to the Miami institution-- will know that combo dish well.

YUM!!

It makes me weep to read this. So many good things, so many happy memories, so unavailable where I live unless we cook it ourselves!
