What is there to see in Beaufort?

We are stopping in Beaufort for a few hours en route to Charleston. I know that you could use several days in Beaufort. But, with our limited time, can anyone suggest what to see in Beaufort?

Beaufort is small and easily seen in a day. You can either drive yourself around The Point area, or take a carriage tour, caught in the waterfront area.

Take a carriage tour. The history on some of the buildings is very interesting. There is one cemetery next to an Episcopal (I think that's what it is) church that is quite old. The inscriptions are fasinating.

St. Helena's (that Episcopal church) is definitely worth a stop.

Some of the crypt covers in the surrounding graveyard were used as operating tables during the Civil War.

Make sure to visit Hunting Island State Park. It's very close to Beaufort and is beautiful.

Certainly worth a day or part of a day. Would do the carriage tour and then walk around. Locations of The Great Santini, The Big Chill and parts of Forest Gump. Think Prince of Tides also.
Very charming or at least it was about ten years ago when we visited.
