what is there do to near Las Vegas for a family?

We may have a chance to go to Nevada this summer. We live in the east and have never been to Nevada, what is there do to for a family with 3 kids, a boy of 13, and two girls 11 and 9? We aren't into gambling, but wouldn't mind going to Las Vegas for a day or two if there was something for us as a family to do. I know we will go to the Grand canyon and maybe the hoover dam, can you suggest anything else?

Red Rock Canyon, a nearby and suitably breathtaking alternative to Sedone or southern Utah. Lake Mead has many things for families to do. You can also make the 31/2-hour drive up to Zion National Park. That's what I'm doing late this summer.

Nevada is home to a number of "ghost towns". State tourism board has details here: http://www.travelnevada.com/activities_mine.asp

Hoover Dam is great. Red Rocks National Park Park has a good scenic drive. Also Valley of Fire Park. Kids should also enjoy the Cirqu du Soleil show "Mystere" at Treasure Island.

Keep in mind summer is very hot (dry not humid), and usually the highs are over 100F with 110F not that unusual. One would need to visit those outdoor attractions very early in the day, to avoid the major heat.

Also if you do wander into the strip, there are amusement park-type rides at various hotels. And a lot of free attractions to take in. My computer is screwy this morning, but the free attractions are listed at Vegas.com.

Valley of Fire is between LV and Zion, not very far from LV; a good place to hike or just drive around; a nice visitors' center. I'm sure you can Google it.

Also, when in LV, be on Fremont Street mid-evening (I think about 9 PM) for the light show, family appropriate.

Vegas has so many outdoor activities, hiking, mountain, biking, boat rides, sight seeing, its quite impressive. It's a great natural area outside of town.
