what is the nicest inn on the Connecticut or Rhode Island coast?
...but not including Newport. I want to take my wife to an inn, right on the coast, the last weekend of February. We stayed at Castle HIll in Newport last year, loved it, but would like to not be in Newport next time.
thanks! |
I'm sorry that I can't be helpful as to inns, but I thought I'd take a moment just to make sure you realize that the coast of Connecticut is on the Sound, not the open Atlantic. I know that many people who want to stay right on the coast are anticipating the look and sound of the ocean waves, so it's important to know that you won't get that in Connecticut.

there is nothing on the CT shoreline that compares to Castle Hill. 2 hotels on the water that come to mind are The waters Edge resort and The saybrook point inn. They are just not in the same league as Castle hill.
|
Well, in beautiful Madison, CT you have the ok Madison Beach Hotel. Its got location, location, location. A few feet from the water. Compared to Castle HiIl? Cant hold a candle-even if the power goes out.

I haven't been there for about twenty years, and I don't know if it's still in existence, but the Lighthouse Inn, in New London CT. was the absolute greatest in the US. The atmosphere, rooms, restaurant, and especially the bar were fantastic. The bar has loads of history, and the bartender twenty years ago had great stories about the Inn, including Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, and others. There is a great big mural behind the bar with an unbelievable story behind it, which includes MM. I hope the place is still around, because it is a treasure. I have a few stories and memories of the place, since I was there for many extended times some years ago.

Walso--I too don't know if it is still around, but we had a fabulous night at the Lighthouse Inn back in '98. I forgot about it until your post.
|
Thanks -- I had a feeling we had hit the peak with Castle Hill, and it was certainly beautiful. We had one of the beach cottages; very reasonable at the end of February, even though you couldn't see the end of your arm through the fog.
The Lighthouse looks pretty good! And, it's right on the water, which is an important criterion. How about the Stonington Inn? Anyone know it? Thanks for the help! |
This place in Little Compton, RI just underwent extensive renovations, but I'm not sure when they are re-opening for business. The website is heavy on hyperbole, but light on information:

I was going to suggest the Stone House Club in Little Compton as well. It doesn't compare to Castle Hill at all, but it is very charming and romantic. Little Compton is a fabulous area.
|
My friend got married at the Stonington Inn a while back and while the location is nice, the hotel was not great. The reviews on tripadvisor are good but the Saybrook Point Inn while only on the Ct. River looks much much nicer and has a spa.
The Steamboat Inn in Mystic looks nice with a few rooms with fireplaces. http://www.steamboatinnmystic.com/rooms.htm http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...nnecticut.html |
PS the Lighthouse Inn in New London is not getting good reviews

I resd some of the reviews. I'm shocked. It's not the Lighthouse Inn I knew. So many great memories down the drain!
|
If I recall corectly, The Stonington Inn has 2 bldgs. Our room was on the water side of the "annex" bldg. The room was beautiful-big and very comfortable. And a very nice view of the harbor. (Over the parking lot.)
|
Wow, yes it looks like the Lighthouse Inn has definitely seen better days. That is too bad. Nice that you can see current reviews so you don't get stuck though!
|
I know it isn't a coast but what about The Point http://www.thepointresort.com/
It certainly looks luxurious. |
i know you said you didn't want newport again, but if you can get a room at the chanler that doesn't brake the bank, it is truly amazing.
|
The Chanler in Newport IS nice - nicer IMO for a romantic retreat than castle hill BY FAR - so if its just castle hill you don't want to repeat try it -
|
This is fantastic, thanks so much for the many responses! I'll do some research on these and let you know. It does look like Lighthouse Inn is out; I think it's worn out.
