What is the current lodging situation at Gulf Shores?

I'm considering a beach weekend for my birthday in May and am wondering about the current hotel situation. Does anyone know the names of accomations that are currently open for business? How is the beach situation? Thanks for any input!

Take a look at this link: http://www.worldgolf.com/newswire/br...-with-tourists.

It appears that the area has recovered nicely. The last time I was in Gulf Shores was March 2004, but I've heard that the businesses in the area have worked really hard to get tourists back.

You might want to call their Board of Tourism for more detailed information (Alabama Gulf Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau at 800-745-SAND (7263) or www.gulfshores.com).

There may be a positive PR spin on things, but bottom line is it's still not back to normal. The news stated the other day that most restaurants are open for business. Lodging is having a harder time . The two main condo management companies are Kaiser and Meyer. They both have web sites, or you might call. The beaches are not that glorious white sugar sand anymore - now a dull brownish color. The area does need the tourist dollars badly, but be aware that it's not the same as before.

Thank you both for your answers--I will definitely check websites and call individual places.
What a shame the area was hit so hard. I would imagine that it would be some time before the area is back to normal. The color of the sand doesn't bother me--just want a nice seaside getaway.
I loved a little restaurant there called "The Shrimp Basket"--is it still there? How did the State Park/ Lodge fare?

Shrimp Basket is open, as is Crico's Pizza next door. Most of the restaurants are open, except Hooter's is gone and The Fish Net is not opened, yet. The lodging situation can be dicey as many of the condos don't have all the required repairs done yet. It looks like all the Phoenix properties are up and running and I know Meyer has some rentals. The snowbirds are still here but should be leaving soon. Come on down...we're working on that sand thing.

Thanks og719--good news about the Shrimp Basket! Wow, there must be alot open if the snowbirds are still there.
